Does PowerDVD5 support the playback of 6.1 DTS ES surround sound on dvds.

if not, which dvd software player supports 6.1 DTS ES?

OK. i found out that it does support 6.1 DTS ES.

but my problem is, i cant hear any sound from the rear centre channel. i have a 6.1 sound card (audigy 2) and 6.1 speakers (megaworks 650d). all the settings are correct, 6.1 speaker system is selected in control panel and 7 speaker setup (even tried 8 speaker) in powerdvd settings.

i tried playing lotr - fellowship and two towers both extended editions which had dolby digital ex and dts es sound. i also tried final destination 2 also with dd ex and dts es. when ever i select the dts es audio, i cant hear anything from the rear centre speaker. however, when i select dolby digital ex, i can hear sound from the rear speaker. all the speakers work perfectly.

i have also updated to the latest driver for my sound card and the installed the lastest patch for powerdvd from the cyberlink website, but still the problem remains. i have emailed tech support at cyberlink but am waiting for a reply.

    Any help?

  3. just a guess but wouldnt any film have just 5.1 sound?? I mean they arent going to put 6.1 sound as well, as virtually no-one has it. When you do get sound out its probably some sort of software mixing going on.

dvds with 6.1 surround sound do exist and 6.1 speaker systems (for home cinema and pcs) also exist. maybe only a few people have it, but in the future they will be more common as some of the lastest releases do include 6.1 surround sound. you can even get 7.1 speakers these days though i am not aware of any dvds in 7.1 format. the special extended editions of lord of the rings is just one example of a dvd with 6.1 surround sound. like i mentioned, i can hear Dolby Digital EX in full 6.1 surround sound, but have a problem with DTS ES.

Dolby digital ex is matrixed from the left and right rear chanel and therefore is not really a true discreet chanel.DTS ES is the only true 6.1 format currently available that has a discreet rear centre chanel.I have the audigy 2 soundcard and I know it supports dolby digital ex but I am not sure if it supports DTS ES(I have lost my packaging)but you should hear the rear centre with dolby digital ex,have you tried another speaker hooked up to the rear centre.

arrived03, you're correct in stating dolby digital ex is matrix encoded sound for the rear centre speaker which is why dvds mention 5.1 Dolby Digital EX and 6.1 DTS ES.

Audigy 2 suuports Dolby Digital EX and not DTS ES. Its the Audigy 2 ZS that supports DTS ES as well. thats why im trying to get PowerDVD 5 Deluxe to do the decoding as it supports DTS ES.

I can play Dolby Digital EX fine with the sound also heard from the rear centre speaker. Its DTS ES that dont output sound to the rear centre speaker. yes i have changed my speakers around and tried it.
