  1. I'm ripping an american DVD of mine which is 29.9 fps 4:3 Interlaced NTSC.

Now, if I encode this without the deinterlacing filter in TMPGEnc I get the horizontal line thing when I playback this. Is there a way of encoding this without deinterlacing and playing it back so that it looks ok (i.e. without those lines ?)

My DVD player will output NTSC or PAL - but is it essential I deinterlace this film ?

If you play it back on a NTSC TV, the lines will not be there.
    Hello.

    Ah, thanks.

Now I can get on and encode my stand up comedy DVDs.

How come those lines don't show up when I watch the DVD ?

You computer monitor is Progressive, the video is interlaced. Some DVD software players will correct for this, but most 'players' and an MPEG2 Codec won't. What you are really seeing is 60 fields/second(this is where your TV lives), combined with whatever your refresh rate is (72? 85? 100?). Change your refresh rate to 60 and the 'problem' is less apparent.

If you intend to watch that on a TV you should NOT
    deinterlace it.

I do intend to watch it on a TV - but without deinterlacing the lines ARE there.

  7. If you don't have an NTSC TV then you need to deinterlace the file when you encode it.

  8. Cyberlink PowerDVD player software does a great job of deinterlacing on playing MPEG2/DVD interlaced video on computer. I use to deinterlace my video when capturing or encoding until I discovered that I didn't need to anymore. My video looks much better without deinterlacing.

Are you guys telling me that PAL TVs are progressive scan ?
    I don't think so.

Anyway If he wants to watch it on a PAL TV he needs to do more
than de-interlace. He needs to do an IVTC, and change the frame rate up
    a little.
