  1. Hey,

I burnt a vcd using nero (the demo) but it won't play on my stand alone DVD player. My stand alone DVD player can play VCD's, DVD's and CD's. Why won't it work? I've tried over and over again with different movies but it won't work.

I have a possibility in mind that might make it work. If I use TMPGEnc to convert it, does it have to be PAL or NSTC? I'm kinda guessing that might be the problem. I'm not sure if that's the prob or not. I'm not a computer whiz, so I can't tell you all the info you might need to help me. If u need more info, just leave a post and i'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for any help.

    Thanks a million

  2. PAL and NTSC should not be an issue. Even if your player doesn't support one or the other, you should still see a PAL/NTSC incompatibility problem (e.g., BW picture, vertical sync problem).

Are you sure that your DVD player can read CD-R/W media? Why don't you try burning an audio CD on your current media and see if your DVD player will accept that.

    Regards.

Not all DVD players can read CDR's, as generally the hardware needs 2 different lasers depending on whether its reading CD/DVDs or CDRs. However, you can fluke a combination that will work for your player. eg. I have sony 725 which only works on Princo & Opus CDR's - no others - it likes the silvery type of die rather than blue or green or gold etc. I believe that my 725 only has 1 laser, and silvery dies have something right about them to work on it.

Also, for starters make sure you make a completely standard VCD - then try non-standard once you've got the standard VCD going. ALso be aware that different machine can handle different bitrates & resolutions - VCD players are not created equal. My 725 can display non-standard VCD resolutions of 720x576 (PAL), 704x576 (PAL), 720x480 (NTSC) & 704x480 (NTSC) plus the standard VCD resolutions. A sony 300 however seems to only be able to handle the standard resolutions.

If you use CQ mode in TMPGENC (like I do) also play around with the maximum & minimum bitrates - don't go to high as most players will choke as they can't seem to pull the data off fast enough. Same goes for the lowest bitrate - if you go too low, then some players can't handle that either. My 725 can only go down to about 800kbps or so before it has syncing problems, plus it needs the padding option turned on.

  4. Hey Kooky_e,

After I burn my first VCD, I tried it on my standalone, wouldn't play it, I was amazed cause I had played commercial VCDs on it before. Anyway I sure know what you felt, and I was saying to myself I could not go on and burn more VCDs if I was doing something wrong. So went down to a shop packed with the latest DVD players, and tried it on one of the CDR compliant one, and it worked. Guess what? I have to buy a new DVD player now...

Maybe you don't have to buy a new DVD player. Maybe all you need is the right kind of CD's. Like, for instance, my DVD player can only play the CD with the golden die, nothing else. Maybe your DVD player can only play a certain type of CD. Play around with it and find out. It would sure save you alot of money...

yep, keep at it kooky - I almost gave up on the 725 until I cracked the right combination. Not only do you need to get the CDR brand/type right, you also need to get the encoding right for your player. Like I said in my earlier posting, as soon as you step outside bog standard VCD settings you are in unknown territory for your player. I've done about 200 test burnings trying all sorts of things. Change only one thing at a time too, otherwise prepare for a hell of a nightmare.
VCD's that I have created for my player do not work on my friends players.
