  1. It's just so much work to re-encode the VCDs I buy from Asia. Is there any store that sells legit NTSC-encoded VCDs? If the store/person doesn't say what a VCD is, I always assume it's PAL. What to do?

In case you couldn't figure it out, I'm the in the U.S.

I don't know of any places selling legitimate NTSC VCDs. However, you could just get a low-cost DVD player that can play PAL VCDs on an NTSC television. Examples include the Apex 500W ($99; Walmart), Apex 660 ($99; Sam's Club), Apex 1500 ($99; Best Buy, K-Mart, Circuit City), and Daewoo 3000N ($99; Sam's Club). Of this group, the Daewoo 3000N seems to have the best VCD picture quality, as well as a lot of other features, such as the ability to deal with dual-language VCDs, headphone jacks, and an easy hack if you want to play *DVDs* from multiple regions.

I think it would be worth it, since it'll save you a lot of time.

Better still, get a Pioneer DV-343 or DV-434. Not only will it play PAL VCDs, but it will play them better than any other consumer-grade DVD player. The difference in playback quality between the Pioneer and Apex product lines is significant.

  4. right now you can get the dv-434 (pioneer) dvd player from buy.com for $150. go to buy.com and there will be a pop-up saying you get free shipping. $150 w/ shipping is a great price for the Pioneer dv-434 player. I just recieved mine from buy.com and it plays everything i throw at it awesome.

    Dancesport,
What type of tv and dvd/vcd player do you have? My next question is going to sound stupid but have you tried playing your "Asia" vcds before you re-encode them?
Again I know that second question might make you say.."What? Of course I have you dummy!". The reason why I ask is that I am allegedly unable to play PAL vcds on my NTSC tv and dvd player but when I bought one to try it(Dune from Eureka Movies), it played no problem. Since then I have bought over 30 original vcd from Malaysia and all have played no problem. Since both my player and tv are NTSC it's my belief that as long as your player plays vcds your tv should play them, unless your tv is old.
I don't for certain if this is the case I can only tell you my experience. By the way Star Trek II is an NTSC original vcd for some reason. I doubt it's the only movie on vcd you'd ever want, I just thought I'd let you know about it.
    Good Luck.
