I'm looking for a second burner. Can the Liteon LDW-401S - retail box - be a viable choice at only $144.99? Anybody using it? Opinions please.

LiteON drives tend to be good at least the DVD drives are. You may want to consider the NEC 1300a dual format drive which you can get for $3 more than the LiteON here.

I've been so tied up at work the past few weeks, I didn't realize that burner prices had dropped so much. I should have done a little more research before I posted. There are more in this price range that I had realized.

Liteon will soon have out a VERY nice combo drive, but for now I think the NEC is best bang for the buck.

There are a couple of advantages to the Liteon that are significant.
1. CD-R / RW burn speed is 40/24 for the Liteon, only 16/10 for the NEC
2. Liteon supports PIO 4, DMA mode 2, and Ultra DMA mode 2 while the
NEC only supports PIO 4
If you plan on doing DVD +R/W and don't need the DVD -R/W capability then it appears that the Liteon would be the better buy. -
this drive is only +R (so you stock with expensive media) and the "dual format" liteon is a Sony drive...
I don't know if NEC have a new firmware, but 1 month ago a lot of user complain about DVD-R incompatibility with this drive (it wasn't a great choice after all)
so for now, i think the Pioneer A06 is the best multi drive -
This is the one I've been waiting to tell all my friends to go out and buy. Finally it's out. Rejoice!

since that Lite-On is only a +R/W, that isn't so hot of a price. +R/W drives have gone down a lot lately....many deals for those drives under $100. there were ppl there able to get memorex +R/W drives for $45 out-the-door.
i think -R/W drives seem to be more expensive lately and w/ less deals....

@vric
