Editable video from external capture?

Are there any sub-$500 external videocapture devices (USB 2, FireWire, or Cardbus) that can capture video suitable for editing and (re)compression to MPEG-2? I know there are dozens of devices that can capture MPEG-2, but from the brief research I've conducted so far tonight, it looks like they're all targeted towards casual home users who just want to easily capture low-res camcorder output with minimal fuss. As opposed to, say, prosumers with high-powered desktop replacement laptops (sadly, not even the most beastially huge desktop replacement laptop can offer PCI slots, let alone AGP...) like, say, the Sager 4760 (allegedly Clevo [the ODM] offers a minipci TV tuner and capture card as a manufacturing option, but Sager apparently wasn't interested in it).

I assume HuffyUV is asking for a bit much, but can any of them at least capture to minimally-compressed MJPEG? Or at least have an MPEG-2 mode that does minimal violence to the source material so recompressing it won't butcher it too badly?

Go to Capture Cards link on the left and do some research. Canopus ADVC100 and Datavideo DAC-100 are well-regarded.
