I was just searching the Best Buy site and realized that they have the best deal i've seen as of yet on the Sony DVD-R's as well as DVD+R's. These disks are 4x and are going for $24.99 for a 10 pack. That's $2.49 each and it's the best deal i've seen on these Sony disks anywhere. I've actually seen them priced as high as $6 a piece...and usually more like $4 a piece. This isn't even a sale price, so it's gonna be interesting to see when Best Buy does have a sale on these Sony's..what their price will be then.
My Sony DVD+RW blank that came with my drive is a Ricoh manufactured disk...and of excellent quality. Ricoh makes some very solid disks...and i'd be willing to bet the manufacturer id of these Sony DVD+R disks are Ricoh. Not sure what the manufactuer id of the Sony DVD-R disks are...maybe i'll grab a 10 pack and find out.
The price is still better on the TDK DVD+R 4x Ricoh disks....so I wouldn't get a huge quantity of the Sony's just yet...but one thing I can say is that anything Sony has their name officially branded on is going to be of the Highest Quality. I've come to find that even unofficially branded cheap Sony disks are of exceptional quality.
Not to say TDK is gonna have crappy disks..because most know TDK/RICOH DVD+R disks or the TDK maxell DVD-R disks are of exceptional quality as well....just saying that i've read a few posts where people have had bad Ricoh disks...but I have YET TO SEE ANYONE say their Sony branded disks were bad....nor have I seen anyone say the RW SONY DISK which came with their Burner is bad.
Point is that these disks are worth getting a 10 pack of...but I'd still stick with the TDK in bulk until the price on the Sony disks drops a little more.
I'm not in an immediate need for media so if someone grabs any of these SONY 4X DVD-R's ..plz report the media id's...and if anyone grabs any of the SONY 4X DVD+Rs..plz do the same...but i'm sure the DVD+R's are Ricoh.

another thing I forgot to mention is that these Sony disks come in Jewel cases. Really ends up being a nice price when you take that into consideration....would love to see these disks go 40-50% off.

IIRC, arent the RICOHJPN media code discs really riteks?
or is it ritek that are rebadging ricoh media?
I bought some ridata discs and they had the same RICOHJPN media code. -
Save yorself some real money. Go back to Best Buy and see if you can get the Memorex 4x disks that are on sale, They too are alleged to be RICOHJPN media. They are on sale at 25 for 29.95. That works out to $1.20 per disk.
If they are out of Memorex 4x, buy the TDK 4x. They are $2.00 per disk and they are absolutely the RICOHJPN media, I know, cause I just bought some. Either way, you are saving over the cost of the Sony media.Burn Baby Burn

problem is you are just making an assumption....one many would incorrectly make. Just like the ASSUMPTIONS people made on this particular Memorex sale to begin with...thinking the Memorex media was crap. That's why I posted that the Memorex 4X DVD+R's were probabaly Ricoh and NOT PRINCO OR CMC....apparently, I was correct.
In the Media world you can't just ASSUME ANYTHING! I wouldn't doubt if Ricoh puts out higher quality disks for one company such as TDK..over another. Do I know this for fact? No, ...but I know other companies do exactly what i'm saying....even with the Ricoh media id's...i'd suspect the media is at least similar to the TDK or SONY manufactured ID media. But it wouldn't surprise me in the LEAST BIT if the Ricoh manufactured disks FOR SONY are of higher quality then both Memorex and TDK manufactured disks...wouldn't surprise me in the least bit.
As I've said..i've read posts where people have had some issues with RICOH media....however, I've yet to see a single post where someone has knocked Sony disks or the "RICOH" manufactured RW that came with their Sony burners. -
Now I understand why your name is defense. Geez, all I did was try to be helpful and you are coming down on me for assuming...
If you notice, I did not assume anything. I used the word alleged. The TDK media that I claimed was RICOH, is RICOH. I know, because I bought some today.
Please excuse me for trying to be helpful and save you some money.Burn Baby Burn

who is coming down on you? lol...you gotta be joking. I was making a point that people ASS-U-ME too much. You can't Assume with DVD Media. It isn't that simple UNFORTUNATELY. You can't just say a company which has produced excellent quality media yesterday like "VERBATIM" will do the same today. And with all of the different manufacturing plants most companies have THROUGHOUT THE WORLD...it's very possible a company can produce higher quality media at one plant for SOME REASON OR ANOTHER...then they do at another plant.
Bottom line is that you posted that someone would be just WASTING money by purchasing those Sony DVD+R Ricoh disks....when in fact...those Sony disks may very well be the highest quality of them all. Manufacturer ID's are helpful....but are limited in determining the quality of media....
I recently has some Verbatim/CMC disks..which were terrible...many others had the same issues. But then I ended up getting Philips DVD+R 2.4x disks...manufactured by none other then CMC...and I am 72 outta 72 with those Philips/CMC disks. That's just amazing and goes to show that you can't just ASS-U-ME because disks are CMC that they are DEFINITE CRAP.....even CMC can produce some high quality disks...and if 72 outta 72 or 100% isn't solid...I don't know what is. -
poppe, click on "Dvd media". look under memorex. they may be a brand name, but they get horrible reviews.

I am not touting Memorex media. I am just stating what I had read elsewhere on this site, that the 4x Memorex media had the same media code as that on the TDK, Fuji, and the 'good' verbatim's.
Personally, I am not that fond of Memorex media. I was lucky today as I went in to Best Buy to check out the Memorex media. I figured that I would purchase some, check out the media codes and if they did have the RICOH code, keep them and be happy. If not, I would return them and nothing was lost. I checked on line at Bestbuy.com before leaving the house, and it said that they were available at my local Best Buy. When I arrived, they were sold-out of Memorex. I spoke to the store manager and told him that the website said it was in stock. He substituted the TDK 4x media and I was a happy camper.Burn Baby Burn

Hi,
If you conduct a search for media code RICOHJPNR01 in DVD Media section you'll get 6 different brands of media /so far/.
Verbatim
Maxell
Traxdata
Memorex
TDK
Ritek
Now can somebody explain this: How come some people have excellent results while other report crappy ones with the SAME disc?
Enjoy! -
Last week I've bought Memeorex +R 25pack for $29.99 from Best Buy. If somebody can tell me how to get the "codes" of the disk, I can post them.
I've burned couple of movies using nero, Sony DRU510A and they play fine on my apex 1500. -
Now can somebody explain this: How come some people have excellent results while other report crappy ones with the SAME disc?
Anyway, the point is that it's becoming more and more clear that you can NOT look at a REPUTABLE DISK MANUFACTURER AND "ASSUME" they will always have high quality disks...REGARDLESS of who manufacturers them. It's very SAD..BUT VERY TRUE. You also can't just assume that manufacturers such as CMC,MEMOREX or even Princo who have had bad reviews for the most part....will ALWAYS have crap media.
Take CMC AND MEMOREX FOR EXAMPLE. When those MEMOREX DISKS went on sale at Best Buy for $1.20 a piece...most people were saying...AHHH...MEMOREX IS CRAP ...MEMOREX SUCKS...BLAH BLAH BLAH....and I "THOUGHT" that too because my experience with Memorex disks was NOT A GOOD ONE. As a matter of fact, my first ever burn was on a MEMOREX DISK AND IT FAILED AND KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT DVD BACKUPS..that was NOT A GOOD FEELING WITH THE VERY FIRST BURN. I didn't know if it was the burner, my methods, the disks....whatever....anyway...
point though is I had just realized that as crappy as CMC can manufacturer Verbatim disks...they can do a COMPLETE 180 with PHilips DVD+R media. I was successful in burning 75 OUT OF 75 CMC MANUFACTURED PHILIPS DVD+R disks...while I was LUCKY to get 2 or 3 out of a 15 pack Verbatim spindle to burn.
Why this is....it's hard to say for sure....but the best two options would be the plants and quality control are much different with all manufacturers. The same must be true with RICOH. As I said....I've read BAD REPORTS regarding RICOH...however, it appears the TDK RICOH MANUFACTURED DVD+R 4X DISKS ARE OF EXCELLENT QUALITY...and I'd be willing to bet that the Sony Ricoh's are even better....if not better...absolutely the same...but it wouldn't shock me if the SONY disks were the highest quality of all the Ricohs. Think about it....SONY's DVD+RW disks that come with the Sony burners are Ricoh manufactured..and how many people have had problems with those? None that I've read.
Point being that I know for sure SONY won't have their name put on a disk unless it's of the highest quality and solid as steel. TDK shows they are very strict as well. But companies such as Verbatim aren't as strict and are more concerned with cutting costs then losing long term customers. Hopefully Verbatim will learn the hard way....
but the bottom line and answer to your question is higher standards, different plants.....thus, the difference in media..even with the same manufacturer id's.
