Ok,, probably a dumb newbie question to ask,, but it's to first time I've actually had to do this:

I'm in the US, and my parents are now in Europe (Serbia to be exact) and they want me to burn the home movies and send them over a dvd to them so that their friends can watch them. What dvd media would mostly be recognized? -R or +R? I can burn both, so I'm tempted to just burn both and send them off,, but hey? Why coaster a disc when I got this lovely forum So which one?

It all depends upon the players they are going to play them on. I have 3 DVD players in my house. All 3 will play -R. 1 will play only -R. 1 will play +R but not +RW. 1 will play +RW but not +R.

    Send them all 4 formats.

  3. Why not check out the DVD players list on this site for the compatibility of the DVD player?

It's always a good idea to find out others' experience before deciding which format is the most compatible. If the player is not on the list, then burn the movies on both +R and -R discs since they are more compatible than the +RW and -RW discs.
