DVD18 catching on now??

seems lately, a lot more new rls are on DVD18. wheneer i see double-sided commercial DVDs, i always assume them to be DVD10...which would be DVD5 on each side...making them extrememly easy to backup...essentially a 1:1 copy.

now, that assumption seems to be going out the window as i encounter more and more DVD10. i think nicholas nickleby is a DVD18 as well as a host of others i don't quite recall.....Dark Blue maybe..

i assume that 1 DVD18 is more expensive to manufacture than 2 DVD9, but i guess maybe that's not the case anymore. if the latter was cheaper to make, i would think the studios would go that route....unless DVD cases that hold 2 DVDs are prohibitively more expensive to make...maybe printing the "artwork" on the top of extra DVDs are more expensive as well.

otherwise, the psychological effect of multi-disc special editions on consumers seem to make them think these editions are truely "special" and somehow better than single DVD editions....

you are right in one aspect, but wrong in another. DVD18's are on the rise....but not at a high rate. There are more of them around over the last six months...but they are still very rare. As a matter of fact, if anything is true, it is that DVD_10's are still very much still alive. I posted this just a week ago or so when three movies which were all new releases ended up being all DVD10's...two of those movies were SwimFan and the Transporter...the thrid I can't think of off the top of my head...but I was pleased to see so many DVD10's with the new releases.

Dark Blue is a DVD18, but they really hyped that movie up calling it the Best movie of the summer..blah blah blah...so I assume they figured they'd spend the extra dough on a DVD-18 and give plenty of extras as well as two versions of the movie "format wise." But they really did shell out a lot of money for advertising for it because for two weeks straight down here every other commercial was a "BLOCKBUSTER" commercial saying how DARK BLUE was the best movie of the summer...blah blah blah.


At any rate....point is that DVD18's are not taking over for DVD10's...at least not yet....as a matter of fact, the only two DVD18's I know of are WINDTALKES AND DARKBLUE. That's two DVD18's i've encountered in 100's of movies...and being that I just said three of the last movies I got were DVD10's....that tells you right there.

just pointed this out since i've encountered several DVD18 recently...as opposed to NONE.

nicholas nickleby, gods & generals, dark blue, windtalkers...and someone mentioned some older movies were also DVD18....but again, those are 4 more movies that are DVD18 than what i expected...which was none, given the increase in manufacturing cost.

Don't forget DVD-14 guys! DVD-9 on one side, DVD-5 on another.

I've seen quite a few corporate training DVDs done in this manner and a few hospitals replicating archival data on such discs - not too sure if it has caught on commercially. Warner Advanced Media Operations (WAMO) has been the premiere replicating facility for these more advanced discs. You will always get a better deal creating 2 DVD-9s over 1 DVD-18 because the DVD-18 production process is very wasteful and replicators do not take kindly to waste on your pocketbook.

o....now that i think about it...i think final destination 2 might be DVD18 as well

Widescreen Side: 7.81 GB
Fullscreen Side: 3.87 GB

Guess its DVD-9/DVD-5. Good to know I can do a 1:1 backup of the fullscreen version. I am guessing though that the special features are all on the Widescreen side of the DVD though. I havent checked that out yet though...I've only watched it once and enjoyed it, I will check this tomorrow though.

heh..my bad...wow...never seen a commercial DVD14 b4..though freestyler mentioned it..it was for corporate training or something
