i have one of the dvd camcorder, and i am trying to edit the footage on the discs i have in premiere. i have the clips in mpeg 2, which i have noticed that it is not very suitable for editing. when i do a render of the clip i get dropped frames, which causes jerky motions. one solution i have thought about is to convert mpeg 2 to avi then edit. does anyone has any comments? are there any good freeware converter out there? i saw several sharewares on download.com, but i would rather not like to spend money. or if you have other solutions, i would really appreciate any input.
thank you.

i have premiere6 and 6,5 years now but i never use theese crap..
if you want convert mpeg2 to avi Virtualdub is the best.
if you want to make vcd or svcd try TMPGEnc. -
Those DVD cameras aren't good if you plan on editing, you're better off with a DV-Cam. MPEGs are dificult to edit. I would use Virtualdub-Mod to convert to avi (you want to add a DV codec so you can ouput to DV-AVI).
Understand that after editing and converting back to MPEG-2, you will loose some quality.Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -
i have tried using virtualdub, but one problem i encounter is that the converted avi have noticeable horizontal lines where there are fast motions. is this normal? how can i best avoid this? also, how can i get a dv avi codex to add to virtualdub. is it available on the website? the version of virtualdub i have is the mpeg2 1.5.4

the mainconcept Dv codec works perfect in v-dub
