  1. I am capturing VHS video using Lord Smurf's excellent guide. I use All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 and on-board soundcard. When I play a test DVD+RW of captured video, it sounds as if the recording level was set too high. I go to start->programs->accessories->entertainment->volume control-> and pull up the recording controls window. Everything is alloed to be adjusted with the exception of "Recording Volume." It is slightly shaded differently and as a result won't allow me to adjustthe level.
    Could this be the problem with my poor sound capture? Also, how can I adjust this level?

    I would help considerably to have a clue about your
    hardware / OS

    However...

    Start->programs->accessories->volume_control
    options->properties->recording then hit enter

    This should show the "real" line in volume control

    When I added my PCI ATI AIW 7200 card last month to my other system, I had to add a new sound card too. SoundBlaster PCI for $30. The onboard soundcard gave me similar issues, in addition to making me drop frames.

    Double-click on your volume icon (in the system tray), goto OPTIONS, then PROPERTIES, then RECORDING. See where that is set, or if it is grayed (may even be the same place you're going already, but another route).

    Also, mute all unused inputs.

    Also, are you sure you are using LINE IN? I use AUX because my cards are wired internally. Talking with other ATI users, we've decided that was the best method, and is actually how OEMs ship the card/PC combos.

    Glad you liked the guide. If you like that one, just wait until sometime next month. All I have to say is you ain't seen nothin' yet!
    The new site, lordsmurf.com, is in the works, and I've gotten some of the greatest minds from several forums to come together on it. It'll have some information I've never seen anywhere else - at least no together like this, as it should be.

  4. Thank you Lord Smurf. My Line-in option is grayed out. Regarding auxillary, do I check it in the properties and uncheck Line-In?
    Also, when capturing from VCR, is it better to use the RCA plugs (Composite) packaged with the AIW or use coaxial from the output of the VCR to the input of the AIW card?

    RCA is MUCH better than coax.
