  1. Im looking for a cheap reliable DVD writer (in canada).

I found this one but has no review in the DB here.
    http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16655&manufacture=Samsung&promoid=1008

Can anyone let me know if this one is good to go, or if they can recommend a good one?

Also found this one and considering it, im getting one for my friend for his bday, and I currently have a Pioneer A04 2x which for this price I might get a second for myself.

The reviews look promosing from the DB.

This is also a cheap one but reviews dont look too promising, the benq looks like the best deal.

Ncix seems to have quite a few cheaper ranged ones here is a LG

And this NEC one also looks good.

Now its just narrowing down the selection.

    Thanks!

You will not go wrong with the NEC3540, an excellent burner, and you should find it for $45-60 Canadian.

  3. NCIX sells it for 62 as you saw, then add shipping and tax it is becoming expensive. Where did you see it for $45?

  4. Thanks Grain, good to meet someone else from canada. Most forums keep giving me american websites and prices.

Im wondering if there is anywhere in Toronto I could buy this place in store for around 55-60, that way I can avoid shipping.

Nice to meet you also Afterlife. As I'm in Alberta, I'm not much help w/ Toronto, but if they are that price in Calgary, they will be in Toronto too, guaranteed. That's a fairly standard price for decent burner's, if your having trouble finding it locally I wouldn't be at all afraid of the BENQ 1640, another option. tigerdirect.ca has a huge inventory, located in Markham Ont., I don't know if they do over the counter though.

  7. Nope they dont, though even if they did wouldnt be worth it as shipping and border fees would cost the retail over here alone.

Ill start giving local PC shops a call next week see if I can find a place that sells it for 50$-$55

    Thanks guys.

Reason I picked NEC 3540 is I hear BENQ are more +R favored. And id rather have a balanced drive.

  9. Yeah I found that LG one at a local supplier for $57. Which IMO isnt too bad.

Tho my only problem with it is on the DVD Writers page it says it doesnt support DVD-R DL?

And some of the people in the posts recommend the BenQ and the NEC 3540 over it?

Should I keep looking for the BenQ or NEC ones or grab the LG ones?

Its entirely your choice.I had a BenQ and wasn't very happy with it.NEC's are supposed to be good.
With the LG it supports DVD-RAM also. The fact that it doesn't support DVD-R DL doesn't bother me,as I would use DVD+R DL.
Some people prefer one drive over another whilst others disagree.
Just make up your mind and get burning.

Edit:The LG is also able to change booktype of DVD+R's to DVD-ROM.the LG GSA 4163B model can anyway. Not all LG models can so check it out.

Another good burner is Lite-On SOHW-1693s. Check this link for a few test done with it. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280509

As far as I can tell it is as good as my older NEC2500 as 4x. At 8x I still think the disk are better with the Lite-on.

Also with Lite-on drivers you have bit-setting and region free without having to use a hacked firmware.

Note: I do not have anything against hacked firmware. With my NEC2500 I have used them all the time. It just more convenient not having to rely on then for the option you are looking for.
