Great Article on cost of DVD, Players and Disks.

My favorite,
DVDs are pricier to make at 30 U.S. cents a piece compared with 10-20 cents for CDs, as producers use a higher quality chemical dye that allows more information to be packed on to a disc.

Actually, my favorite quote is:
"But sales have been relatively slow, and market researcher iSuppli predicted DVD recorders were unlikely to become commonplace until 2007, because they cost $600-$800 each compared to just $100 for a simple DVD player. "
The analysts don't have a clue when it comes to DVD burners -- they weren't even mentioned. I think burners are by *far* the biggest change in DVD recording, and what is pushing the growth (but what do I know?)
It *was* interesting they are predicting prices of around 50 to 70 cents a piece for disks next year (that was comparing them to an average price of $1.20 this year, so they are definitely talking bulk and not necessarily the branded disks). I'm just hoping we see branded media available consistently for $1.20 or so in the coming year."Like a knife, he cuts through life, like every day's his last" -- Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -
Ritek is #2?Just a month ago an article from digitimes.com stated Ritek was #1 by a huge margin.
I quess there is a moral here somewhere, maybe "don't believe everything you read". -
When I was looking for some deals on the web I came across a website that said they had quit selling Ritek DVD's due to the number of failed discs and complaints. How can they be #1 or even #2?

Here's the article from digitimes.com:http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article1.asp?datePublish=2003/06/17&pages=04&seq=20
The numbers in this article are submitted by Ritek so they may not be accurate. -
Don't see any inconsistency. If you read the articles more closely. CMC is the top player in optical disk market (including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM) while Ritek is the market leader in recordable DVD (DVD-R & DVD-RW).

Up until that point, the next best price on quality media were the TDK DVD+R 4x disks that best buy had for about $1.29 a piece. Hopefully the next sale will bring prices down on high quality media to $1.10 or less.
And hopefully that trend of sale prices on higher quality media getting lower and lower will progressively continue. -
Oh, I'm well familiar with sale prices -- I've bought over 300 disks over the last month or so all for $1.50 or less, and all quality media (TDK, Verbatim, etc.)
But I'm not so sure these sales will last -- I think we're seeing a lot of stores like BB and Target trying to be *your* store for media.
What I want are "normal" every day to day prices for quality media to be $1.20 or so. When that happens I'll be a happy man (hopefully by the end of this year)."Like a knife, he cuts through life, like every day's his last" -- Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -
I think this article is referring to supply to the big movie production houses, those that sell the original movies, I think compared to this the retail Dvd computer burner market is tiny ( unless people are burning two to three movies a day.
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
I'm pretty sure they were talking about DVDR there man. If CMC and Ritek were mentioned.
Anyway I agree about the sale thing. Who cares if a specific type/brand of media is onsale alot, it will not always last. Its across the board price drops we need here.
Woowoo! -
I think the online DVD media stores must all talk to each other because they all offer the same media at almost the same price within pennies.
