  1. For some reason I've been running into this error lately in WMP with numerous videos. I don't know what it means, and the error code for it isn't on microsofts site. I've tried loading the video into numerous video editors and they don't read it properly. If this were a just few files I might just dismiss it as a corrupt file, but it happens to too many files and I can't even find out what class not registered means. Anyone have any ideas?

The error messages wants to tell you, that the video file was encoded by an unknown codec. You have to look at the first bytes (use VirtualDub Hex editor to do this) and look at the so called FOURCC code after vidc. Then search in the web for this codec and install it this will only work of course if it's an avi file.

  3. It doesn't make sense to me why the error says 'class not registered' instead of just an unknown codec error. Alot of the files are mpg's, or at least have an .mpg file extention. I'm not used to looking at hex code but the mpeg files don't offer any clues in the first few lines in the hex editor. The avi files do offer some clues; IV32, cvid, iv50 are aparently the codecs for some of the files. My best guess would be that iv32 and iv50 are indeo video, but I have that codec installed already. Also the fist line says RIFF AVI LIST, I'm just not sure what RIFF means. Still not sure how to fix these files.

You are right. With mpg it (AFAUK) impossible to determine which codec is used. As of avi, for Windows a codec is a "class" (a kind of filter-server).RIFF itself a sort of file format used mainly for multimedia files.RIFF stands for Resource Interchange File Format.
