  1. Just bought a Panasonic DMR-E50 yesterday and have created several DVD's with no problems (they look great at the XP speed-haven't checked out any other speeds yet though).

I'm wondering what the easiest way for me to copy these for friends on a Mac (i have toast but my external DVD burner doesn't work with OSX).Also what is the easiest way to import the video to make other Compilation video's-can this be done in Quicktime Pro?

Can i just drag the VIDEO_TS folder into Toast and burn it??

    Thanks for your help-

    Spike

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check the sticky i have at the top of the mac forum, it tells you exactly how to burn a dvd in toast

simply dragging the VIDEO_TS folder to toast will tell toast to make your DVD name VIDEO_TS with all the files in the root of the disk.

    That just wont work!

    In short!

    1. Open Toast
    2. in OTHER choose DVD
    3. Click NEW DVD (name it using standard DVD naming ALL CAPS and _ for spaces
    4. Click NEW FOLDER, name that folder AUDIO_TS
    5. NOW drag your VIDEO_TS folder to toast.

then use the arrow to the left of VIDEO_TS and check that there is no invisible files in the folder. If there are, just click on them once, and use the remove key.

    then burn.

My understanding is that these types of machines use DVD+R disk. Does yours?!

What type of external burner do you have? I thought toast was the most powerful tool for powering external dvd writers?!?!?!

Are you talking how to compile several of the dvd's you get from the DMR-E05 into a single dvd? Quicktime Pro wouldnt be the one to do this if thats what you are trying to do. Other apps, DVD STUDIO PRO for example, would be more of what you woudl need to author a compilation dvd, or even sizzle to some degreee

Sweet, im looking more at these since i looked up what the model he has does. The prices have come way down from when I looked at these when the idea was introduced.

    Impressive!

    DVD-R I'm pretty sure (well-definitely my computer sees it as a DVD-R)

A Pioneer DVR-105-Evidently this is an issue with external DVD burners in Toast and or OSX.I've seen it discussed on different forums (the Roxio Toast forum for one)-Mac says it's a Roxio problem and Roxio says it's an OSX problem-it works fine in 9.2.2.I don't seem to be able to get mine to work in OSX at all, even burning form the finder (is that a pain in the ass or what?it takes like 9 times longer...).Does anyone know of a patch/fix for this problem?

How do you have this DVR-105 hooked up? A firewire encolsure?
When you go to the system profiler what sort of info (if any) is given on the peripherals (does it show up as an active peripheral)

What version of toast are you using? 5.2.x???
I would think this would work!

    Yes firewire.
in os 9 the System Profiler the disc but not the drive (?)-that is it's reading the DVD and the DVD itself shows up but not the drive (or I'm not finding it anyway)-i can see there's something on the bus but it's not showing any info right now-although Toast is working fine in OS9 (?)

in osx it's showing up as an active periphral
but i've tried to burn discs with it in osx and it always just hangs at the beginning of a recording and becomes a coaster

    using 5.2.1

yeah-i would think this should and would work but evidently it doesn't in OSX with an external firewire burner (like i said, this is something I've read about on the Roxio Toast forum, not something unique to me).If there is anyone here that is using Toast in OSX on an external firewire burner please chime in and let me know if there's a patch or fix for this problem or if it just worked out of the box for you.

The thing is my brother has a set up just like yours, but his is a DVR-103.
Not a problem at all with toast.

The "making coasters" in the beginning could be dvd media, but if the same disks burn fine with OS9 then its a mystery to me.

Ill ask my bro if he had to do anything, but if memory serves, as long as its showing up in Toast as a usable drive, it should work

have you tried other options, such as burning CD's...............

I'm using the Lacie d2 external Firewire/USB 2.0 DVDRW drive and have had NO problems. At heart, this drive is a Pioneer DVR-105 so it's the same principle.

Although, if anyone can ever explain this...

The last time I updated to 10.2.6, my drive would go to burn a DVD, and after writing the "lead-in", it would immediately report a buffer underrun. Even in simulation mode. I've been using 10.2.1 for awhile now specifically because of this.

Also, something else that bugs me. If i'm using DVD Player, in order to play the DVD before ripping it, I've got to be in OS 10.1, because DVD Player just opens without any result ( ever had that? the fast zooming rectangle that happens when you double click an application, but the application doesnt even boot? )

Who knows. I live by the principle of "find a way to make it work, then don't change a fakin' thing!"

I use a LaCie DVD-RW/R Firewire (Pioneer 105) drive with Toast on my G4 867 with OS X 10.2.6 with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I have never had a problem with any FW drive on my Mac (3 hd's, 1 CD-RW, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD-RW/R, 1 scanner).

    Back to the purpose:
I spoke with a apple helper on apple discussions, and he said that toast is pretty much the only way you can use an external burner, since none of the iapps will beable to recognize that drive. The issue here I think, is not that toast doesnt see it, but rather than dvd burning doestn seem to work.

    Is that correct?

If so, it could be one of two things
    1. the drive has a problem
    2. its faulty media

thats about all i can think of really.

I use Toast on a Pioneer DVR-103 set in a Firewire box it it works just fine. Never had a problem with it other than it's slow rip speed.
