Just picked up Gods and Generals and I've noticed something I haven't seen before...
It's a dvd-18!!!!
I didn't know that was possible...it's a flipper where both sides are dvd-9's
I'm off to look into the best way to back it up....I'll get back with my results.

It's still a DVD-9, a double sided DVD-9
DVD-18 would have to have 18GB on one side -
so is Dark Blue. That movie was just released officially on DVD about 2 weeks ago, and I posted the same thing two weeks ago. I had never seen the issue prior to "DARK BLUE" but adam responded and said it is rare because of the fact that DVD-18's are very expensive.
I haven't seen Windtalkers yet, but I remember hearing someone talking about seeing it numerous times and saying it was great. I'll have to check that movie out.
On another note, I was thinking that DVD5's or DVD10's were pretty much dead for ANY new releases...or at least SUPER SLIM....and 2 "newer" DVD Releases are DVD10's.... "SWIMFAN" and "TRANSPORTER"...and even though SWIMFAN is only about 90 mins long..that doesn't mean much this day because of all the extra's...but in this case, it worked out...good to see DVD5 and DVD10 aren't completley dead.

But Gods and Generals is Nearly 4 hours long,
what are ya gonna do recode so all 4hrs fit
on one dvd-r?or just run w/ the pack and go
for 2 discs with dvd2one/ic7?? -
The best way to back up Gods and Generals if you like the film is to buy another copy @ Costco for 19.99US. It to frickin BIG, for God sakes!!!!

thayne, the official name for a double sided dual layered disk is a DVD-18 because it holds about 18 gigs, just like how a DVD-10 holds about 10 gigs total even though its still 5 gigs per side..
They are more expensive to produce but are particularly useful if the movie is very long or if the movie is relatively long and they want to include both the WS and FS release on one disk, ala Windtalkers. Like others said, they are very rare but they are out there. I've run across 3 or so of them over the years. -
still would be cheaper for them to have 2 DVD9's..instead of one big ass DVD18.
since you still have to flip the DVD18 over, it's basically the same as having 2 separate discs....and we all know how ppl love those "2 disc collector editions" -
Ok...here's the update.
I found out that the movie is spread over both sides of the dvd-18. 2 hours on side 1 and almost 2 MORE hours on side 2.
I decided that since the movie was already split, I would just do a dvd2one 2-disk deal....the first problem is that DVDDecrypter 316 ran into problems and would not rip VTS_01_5...I looked around for my old 315 version and it ripped just fine. Processesed through dvd2one and burned with Nero without a problem.
I suppose I could have renamed the vobs from the second side to line up with the vobs from the first side, run them through ifoedit, process in dvd2one and burn in Nero....but considering the MOVIE is 12gb....I decided the 2 disk solution would be better here. The 2 disk method brought me from 12gb to about 9gb....that sounds ALOT better than squeezing 12gb into 4.3gb
