Question Guys
Thinking on buying the ADVC-100 or a DV Camera to capture VHS into my computer. Would using a DV camera give me the same quality as using the ADVC-100? My VHS would go through the camera then to my computer. Instead of spending the $300 for the 100 I would apply it to a good DV camera.
Thanks for any advice.

I've got both--an ADVC-100 and 2 Sony's. I've only tried the one Sony with pass-through--a GV-D200, a D8 VCR (great piece of hardware). Problem with pass-through is that it loses audio sync about an hour into the capture. Do a search and you'll find others have reported this problem with Sonys. I've not tried pass-through with my mini-DV TRV-30.
My suggestion--go with the ADVC-100. The AV sync is locked--plus you can defeat macrovision if you have commercial tapes. It's still the top-rated capture device (at least a few weeks ago when I looked).
Just my $.02.

Ive tried the same thing but with the base model digital canon....had the exact same problems as the post of the sony...audio sync is a bitch!....ended up buying advc 100 as well
My 5 cents worth....inflation has rendered 2cents to extinctionThe only difference between right and wrong is gender........ -
Hmmm curious ........ I use a Canon ZR-40 and have had no audio sync problems (max done has been 2 hour VHS tapes) when using the pass through.
The ADVC-50 may also suit your needs if you don't need the macrovision disabled.

I purchased the ADVC-100 after my Pinnicle DV500 could keep the audio sync. It was awsome. My original media was some old VHS home video from long ago. The sync issues became a problem only when there were gaps/breaks in the video (like stopping and ejecting the tape and then the tape had some slack and didn't record on a very small portion when reinserted).
I even saw audio sync problems with the same senario on my 8mm handycam, but the ADVC-100 locked the video and audio perfectly. -

I have ADVC 50 and I have perfect lip syn which I feel is not possible with other cards such as Dazzle DVC II, Pinnacle MP 30 etc.

How does everyone feel about the quality?
With my ATI-8500dv, VHS to mpg2. The mpeg comes out darker then the original VHS.
With the Canopus do you find that the captured image is as good as the original image, especially when it comes to darker films.

I have never had any sync issue while using the passthrough feature of my Sony TRV-25.
Given the fact that DV is interlaced, playback of DV on Windows Media Player (which doesn't properly de-interlace the video upon playback) will sometimes appear out of sync. However, if you play it back on PowerDVD (which properly de-interlaces the video upon playback), you will no longer notice this out of sync "illusion". Another option is to ignore this interlacing effect, convert the DV to DVD or SVCD and playback the video on a TV (which can handle interlaced video). The video will playback in sync.
