(Other movies such as Batman and Space Jam had been demonstrated earlier, but were not full versions available for sale.)

yes i remember i had the assassin in the toshiba dvd format., and a friend of mine had it in the sony format

don't ask me how he got though, because the sony format was never released to the public as far as i know

they had 2 different dvd format in 1995

the toshiba one and the sony one

they both played movies but were imcompatible with each other

but they (the fcc i think they were called) made both of them go back to the drawing board

as they didn't want another beta vs vhs war

and they finally agree to the toshiba dvd format

that why dvd players came out 2 years late

I'd have to think that the first DVD's were most likey porn. Since the pron industry tends to be early adapters of new technology this just has to be the case...

This rang a bell for me and I was in New York when the DVD player was first released during March 1997. I remember the promos of it.

It was way, way very expensive, well over $2,000 to $3,000 range to buy one then. Now it is so cheap as hot cakes.

Certainly LD movies was very expensive in early days and I remember paying so much for much better image and sound.

I still have them and they are going out the door soon just like VHS as too old. The LD as Macrovision free is a great advantage using it so I back them up for my own use just in case.

Anyway, most of my video collection is now as DVD and they are a lot cheaper with the prices going down all the time.

I now only got a handfull of VHS tapes left. The VHS VCR is now only used for time-shifting of TV shows and live TV events.

Wouldn't surprize me of the "new generation" DVD in the future perhaps "high definition" with longer times in the disk to play or record.
