I was wondering if anyone has ever downloaded and used these tools from PCworld.com. RegClean and dRAMatic v6.0??? If so do they work or should I stay away from these tools or other similar types????

  2. I have not used either of these programs, but I am either familiar with them or have used similar applications.

Based on what I know about you via your posts, I would say that you probably don't need to worry about these programs yet. I have not used regclean, but I have used Registry cleaning apps before...I dunno, I'd almost recommend installing your OS on a separate partition and just reinstalling it when necessary than futzing with these types of apps...if I can ever clear out a full weekend, my C drive is going to have a complete overhaul and I'm going to partition XP onto its own little space. In theory, fixing your Registry can be a wonderful thing, but it can also be a total screw-up and I think it's not something you need to worry about yet. (I will save the explanation of why a registry would need to be cleaned for another post)

At 512MB RAM, I'd ask you what you're doing and what sort of problems you are experiencing before recommending dRAMatic...I think a lot of these apps get touted as a panacea for whatever ails your computer, but they may not solve your particular problem...heck, you may not have a problem to begin with at all. 512 MB is a good bit of RAM, and should really be suitable for mst anything you are doing...I use to make commercials on a P3 (aboubt 700 MHtz, maybe?) laptop w/ 256MB RAM...it was slower than my P4 desktop, sure, but it did a damn fine job on video work; I just had to be patient...

Ultimately, it's like asking, "Will these top-of-the-line, $10 apiece spark plugs make my car run better?" Well... maybe, maybe not -- it may not fix your specific problem...So, ask yourself if there is a specific problem you are trying to fix...if so, let's find you the specific tools to fix it, otherwise don't worry about it...

Again, my opinions are not based on empirical experience with these specific programs, and are merely based on what information I do know about these app and others like them...other posters may have their own success stories,,,

    Happy 4th...and goo'night

I actually went to a site recommended by another member here...www.pcworld.com. And Karate, I am only looking for things to boost RAM performance on our old computer but am using my everyday computer on this forum. So the answer is no I am not having any problems with my system...in fact it is smokin' fast and I love it! I did however find a utility on that site that keeps your RAM freed up and uses very little resources and can run in the background or be run manually from time to time. Seems to work great and although I have no problems with this computer...I liked the way it worked on the other older computer and put it on this one. Really does seem to work....but I don't intend on running software that claims RAM performance boosts since from what I have heard, it can do more harm than good. Thanks again for replying to my posts since you seem to have quite a bit of good advice!
