I saw a card at Radio Shack called the Hauppage WinTV go. Is this a good card? Also what resoultion will it capture in and how can I get around the win98 2 gb limit.
Sorry for being brief but my first post didn't work and I didn't want to type it out again.

My system is a pIII 600 with 128 MB ram and a TNT2 ultra 32MB

This card will capture only in AVI, got mine for $49 at Fry's electronics. Use vitural Dub(free) and get up to win98 max 4 GB, if you use win2000, XP, linux there is no limitation.
You captured AVI will look fantastic but huge about 300MB a minute, then encode the raw AVI using TMPGE Beta B (free).
I use this to capture VCD's so capture in 352x240 29.97 frames NTSC or 352x288 24.97 frames PAL.
It will capture 480x480 for SVCD with overlay turned off. But the AVI's are really huge in this format.
If space is a concern and you don't need to edit I want to capture really big Video sources like VHS, DVD I would recomend a MPEG encoder card that capture directly to MPEG 1 or MPEG2, I have the Hampuagge WIN PVR card, captures MPEG2 SVCD great. -
Will the card bypass the macrovision or will I need to hack my dvd player?

I use this card and capture to DivX AVI, not bad quality and very small files.
Macrovision is in your DVD player, you need to disable it there or the output from your DVD player will be no good.

Dont think so, even using DivX.AVI at that size I think you would loose frames, audio will be fine. -
480x480 just depends how powerful your setup is, I get no frame drops with using virtual dub and a 1.2 gig thunderbird with 512 megs of ram under win98.
When I had a AMD 500 with 256 megs ram, drop frames were about 1 to every 60-90 frames.
Also remember you can not be doing any multi-tasking all while capturing AVI, I even turn off Macafee and direct CD in task bar.
I use an APEX 660 DVD player that the Rom chip inside is flash, so I just flashed with a CD-R new firmware that disengaged Macrovision. Paid $119 for player, upgrade free from net. -
Another question... why is it important to enable DMA on my HD? Windows gives me a warning when I go to change it. Will this make my system unstable?
