I think vcd and dvd still have a major thing to be improved. VCD and DVD are so fragile. Scratch on the surface of the data size can risk the playable life of a disc. I think computer scientists should invent a disc that is protected by a cover like the 3.5 inch floppy disc. In this way, we will never afraid of scratch on the surface of the disc. And, we don't need that cd box that is bully to store only one cd at a time.

Inventing it isnt the hard part. Introducing it would be. Just imagine a major medium change just like that?
It would cost billions...
Also, I own about 600 CDs and I do not own one that is unplayable due to scratches. Mind you, I dont have any kids yet...

I'm not sure you remember CD-ROM disc caddies. You would put your CDs inside on them and they became like big 3.5" floppies (protected with a little sliding piece). EVERYONE hated them.
You had to buy a caddie for each disc (if you swapped then what's the point of the caddie) they cost more money, and most people felt they were smart enough not to touch the disc. -
Only one scratch may not be the problem, but many scratches can cause problem. Also, some scratches can be very deep inside the disc. CD cleaner may not help to repair it. Although the disc may be playable, the disc may skip frame or stop playing sometimes.
I hope they can improve this in the next generation for video media.

It doesn't really matter if the "playing" side gets scratched (well, maybe if you're scraping it on the pavement). Buy yourself a bench grinder and a couple of buffing pads and get on with your life. You want to avoid scratching the TOP of the disc. That's where the data is stored. Paper or Vinyl labels protect fairly well in most cases. Double sided DVDs can't take labels, obviously, but the recorded media is sandwitched between the plastic, so there's still not a huge concern for them either.

I know of one group who loved them. Auto MechanicsSeriously, I used to fix a computer in an Auto Shop and they used to use those to protect their CD's from Oil and grime.
I suppose you could replace a DVD drive with a CDROM with the Caddies but... why???? -
Sorry, I have to correct my original message:
I use the wrong word. The word should be "bulky" and not "bully".

i remember the old cd caddies.. i never had a cd caddy drive, but it seemed like a good idea.. and really, it is a good idea for dvd's.. but really, why would the dvd industry let one be introduced? if dvd'scratched up, people will buy more dvd's.. if they dont get scratched up (because they're in a caddy), no extra sales.. its all about money..
but really, if the caddies only cost $1 or so each and the players that support them are good quality, i dont see why anyone wouldnt want to buy one.. its a great investment. i dont see why you shouldnt get a free cd caddy when you buy the dvd.. just give me a paper box with a cd caddy inside & the picture of my movie on the cd caddy.. and if some people's players dont support cd caddys, they can take them out of the caddy..
but then again.. this is probably not going to happen..

Why not just keep the jewel case they come in and I don't know .... ummmm.... Be careful with the damn disk? I hated those caddies and as for mini-disks? I found some that I want to try burning short films to. They only hold like 156 MB so I don't know how much time that will be just yet. I figure about 15-20 minutes in rough math. They cost about $4 each and are found in the digital camera equipment areas.
Should be interesting to see how much you can cram on a disk. -
i think you lot should just be more carefull with your cd s..
i have hundreds of cd s ..i have none that are scratched
and even if they did get scratched , i would just re place them, it s only £20 for a dvd for christ sake
