2000 Pro was the best MS OS ever, in my opinion. Now I use 2002 Pro... AKA XP Professional. The NT Platform has always been the better half of Windows technology. So home users and business users were always segregated by the OS. You would trade stability, long up times, and efficiency (NT) for compatibility, user friendliness, and entertainment(9x/ME).
In Windows 2000 Pro MS started merging the two platforms into one. They did a pretty good job. But in XP, they've finished merging the two seperate OSes... by really just dropping the 9x/ME codebase and sticking with the NT codebase, and making it more functional for home users. So if you can, buy XP Professional. If you can't afford it, get the Devils0wn build 2600 final release, because it is worth it... truly nice OS. Might be their best one yet as soon as it is released and hardware manufacturers actually start to release more drivers for the OS.

Almost forgot your cable modem issue!
Well, the way our cable company works is that you have to fill out a certain computer name for your computer as if you were on a Local Area Network. This computer name is essential to your cable internet connection. It is the equivalent to the Dial-Up Networking login and password for a normal ISP. So without your correct computer name, you will not have internet access. Another thing that might be awry, is your network card drivers... but that's kinda hard to believe, cause Win2K Pro is a business OS, and has like virtually every NIC in its driver database.
As for your soundcard, simply getting the proper windows 2k drivers for it from the manufacturer's site should do the trick. But I see how that can be dificult if you can't access the net. Good luck!
