One of my local PC shops here (Australia) has just brought in Pioneer A106 OEM Burners for $500AUD, which seems pretty good. However what I am unsure of is if it worth paying more for the non-OEM version for the additional software?

    What you guys think?

    Kind Regards

With a non-OEM version, your getting added software plus a longer warrenty. Thats about the only difference.

  4. I have the OEM version of the A05 and have had no problems with it. Burned 50 DVD's so far with no coasters. If you have DVD authoring software already I would definately go OEM!

  5. Amelia,

Not sure if this reply is any help but I recently ordered the A06 OEM from http://www.pcmarket.com.au/pricelist/index.php which had the drive at $450+postage (you can save up to $50.00). I was told it was arriving into the store today (Wednesday) and I should get it delivered by the end of the week.

Anyhow, I chose the OEM because I didn't need the extra software (i think its some cutdown Ulead DVD Workshop version) and medias (i think 1 DVDRW and 1 DVDR) that comes with it. Besides, the drive should be the same (despite the name) and it does come with some software (Nero and another I think) which I feel is adequate enough. My experiences with non-OEM purchases is that the software supplied with the units most of time is not complete in themselves (usually an SE version or some even are outdated versions). But that's my experience and the choice is obviously yours to make.

    Good luck with the purchase.

Wow, what do you mean you're not sure THANKS FOR THE LINK, leaves more $$$$ for DVDs

I had a look and it will only cost around $10 post to Melbourne. I emailed them to find out if they have any stock.

Finally thanks everyone, I am more comfortable in going with the OEM now.

    Thanks

    THANK YOU ALL!!!!

    I now have a A06 or should I say A106

The OEM was well much better value and it looks like the only thing I missed out on was a Color Box and Two DVDs. The OEM version still came with all the crappy software.

    Thanks Again.

Get ready for a whole lot more questions from me

    Cheers

Just so you know, if you buy OEM you are NOT eleigible for support from Pioneer. Normally OEM models are sold to computer manufacturers who bundle support of the drive in with the rest of the computer. While you can still download firmware updates (when available) you will not be able to return the drive to Pioneer should it break down.

Try getting it in WRITING. I know of at least 3 people who have tried to get support for OEM drives in the US and Pioneer instructed them to "contact their OEM provider for support."

While Pioneer Australia may provide support for OEM drives, they are under no obligation to do so. Like I said, try and get that in WRITING from them.

I am sure its legislation here (12 months min). It like when they have registration cards that say you must send in for your warranty, in Australia those reg cards mean nothing and manufactures cannot get out of it if you don't send in your reg card.

    Best Regards

it is true that here in aust under legislation you have 12mths warranty and warranty cards mean nothing at all. except the manufacturor can send you advertising if they get your details.

    good luck with the drive.
