First off let me say that ffmpegX is a great piece of software. I have been using it for quite some time now and it has solved a great deal of my dvd backup problems (and my dvd collection is no long at the mercy of friends and relatives who don't have the same respect for disks that I do)

Recently my dvd rip program (I usually use 42) has been causing the audio to be just a smidgen out of synch. I alway use ffmpegX to mux and split my files (it is by far the best app to do this) into seperate disks. I have been having a hard time demuxing and remuxing files that have been split using ffmpegX. The first files always works perfectly, but the other files will not remux. I was wondering, would it be possible to incorporate an offset into the muxing process (sort of like in missingmpegtools)? That way I could offset the audio/video the small amount I need during the splitting process.

Hope you are able to help. Thanks again for a great piece of software.

you may want to put this in the ffmpegx forum. Since its a ffmpegx related request/topic.

One thought, why use 42 to rip your dvd?? Are you trying to from dvd to 1 dvdr or dvd to 2 dvdr. There are other ways for both options.

Damn, sorry about that, I meant to put it in the ffmpegX forum. Gotta kickstart my brain this morning.

DVD to DVD is just not economical enough for me. It still costs like $2 each for a blank dvd. Blank CDs are like 10 or 20 cents each, so I just do DVD to SVCD. I already have my original dvd copy that I can watch myself so I just need an easy backup. My 7 year old nephews don't really care about quality that much

The dvd to svcd sync drift can often be fixed by doing the conversion in parts, then combining the parts when done

    say chapters 1-5 first
    5-10 next
    and 10-15 last

get all the .mpeg files, combine to one large one
the more chunks you do the more your sync will stay on track

that is if you are using the correct settings for frame rate etc etc.. assuming its on sync in the first place generally means you are.

(this comes from my experience with a movie that actually changes frame rates thoughout the film. so the only way was to do it chapter by chapter and find the frame rate that fit to make each chapter sync!)

I may try that. I think the problem is with my machine though. Forty Two usually keeps the audio perfectly in synch every time (it licked the changing frame rate problem) and has done so right up till my last few backups. I may reinstall and see if it helps. Thanks for the advice though

    no problem

you can also do this splitting with 42 you know. just select the first 1/2 of chapters. run the encoding

then select the 2nd half of the chapters, run teh encoding.

    it may help.
