I'm trying to convert a D/L'd XviD AVI into SVCD format for playing on a DVD player. I am following the guide on this site explicitly with the only exception being that I'm using Goldwave to extract the sound into WAV format for the re-encoding and the end result plays (picture is perfect) but the sound is *very* badly out of sync and stops/starts in a stuttering kind of way.

It's almost like I was playing it on a computer with not enough free ram or something and the audio stream keeps stuttering and crapping out. The picture remains fine however.

Can anyone please help with this? I'm not sure if this is a compatibility problem with my DVD player or an encoding problem because it's brand new and I've never tried an SVCD in it before - though the user manual does say it supports playing of SVCD discs.

BTW - I *can* successfully convert the XviD into VCD format using the guide on this website, but I want to know how to make it work in SVCD format.

    Thanks,

Okay. Not a lot of help there.

Is it possible that I need an MPEG 2 encoder to do this?

I'm using TMPGEnc v2.513.53.162 on basically a brand new W2K Pro installation. No codec packs installed to mess thing up - just XviD & DivX codecs installed.

    Please help.

tell me this does the wav you saved from goldwave stutter and skip when you play it back in gold wave? Did you save the wave at at 48000 bit rate or is it still at 44100 bitrate?

Thank you. I am an idiot. It seems I have missed the "resample down to 44100Hz" step in the Goldwave extraction guide.

To be fair to myself however when I started this, I couldn't find any guide on Goldwave for extracting audio, only for VirtualDub. Since I had sync problems using VirtualDub I had to give Goldwave a go instead.

I trying it again now with a resampled 44100Hz version of the WAV instead.

Would still appreciate any advice on how to get the aspect ratio right as per my other posting.

    Cheers,

Okay. I thought I was being an idiot by missing the resample down to 44.1 option in Goldwave but as it turns out I wasn't. Even when I didn't do this, TMPGEnc did this automatically for me during the encoding process. The end result is that the problem described above still exists even after doing the audio resample in Goldwave first.

To answer your question... yes, the WAV file does play perfectly.

I think I am making some progress though. Up until now I have been burning CDs and playing them in my brand new Sony DVD player to test as I don't have a DVD drive in the computer & therefore have little use for PowerDVD.

To isolate the problem further however I have just D/L'd PowerDVD v5.0. This program plays the TMPGEnc SVCD MPEG file without a problem. No stuttering sound, no sync problems, nothing.

I therefore now think the problem is a DVD player hardware/compatibility based one. Having said that however, is the problem I describe above symptomatic of a player that needs the VCD Header trick applied to SVCDs to play them correctly?

My DVD manual says it can play SVCDs which leaves me wondering what's going on.

    Thanks,
