I have a 60G Maxtor firewire drive, and I'd like to replace the hard disk with a much bigger one. Is this possible and is it straight forward? Would I be limited to any particular size disk? I just cant seem to open the damn casing!

    Thanks guys!

  2. Personally, I own an Iomega external HDD, and I wouldn't even think of opening it up -- it doesn't seem built for easy access. I assume the Maxtor case is similar.

I would suggest in investing in a $99 firewire casing for your new hard drive -- an example is the Pyro 1394 drive kit, see one at best buy at http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11092108&m=488&cat=511&scat=512 . You might even be able to find one for less. It's more than you may have wanted to spend, but you'll be able to upgrade your drive much more easily in the future.

(I know it's not the answer you were looking for, but I really don't think it's a good idea to crack open that casing! At the very least you'll have that much more extra storage on hand, or you could sell you current Maxtor external drive to cover the cost of the 1394 Drive Kit)
