I say no. The internal MPEG1/MPEG2 encoder of DVDx makes low quality video with noticable jagged edges, bad color (like a bad dither process) and other artifacts. It looked like worthless sh!t to me. I suggest using bbMPEG encoder plugin to export a .mpg file from DVDx, or use Premiere Video Server Plugin to frame-serve from DVDx to TMPGEnc (or other standalone encoder). Consult the DVDx documentation on how to use Premiere type plugins with DVDx. The bbMPEG plugin is Premiere compatible. I think the plugin file names must have the extension .prm in order to work.

You can download both plugins from this website.

??? encoder of DVDx makes low quality????.

Strange ?, I get good results with DVDX 2.2, it's versatile, easy to use, and you can use it in the middle of the night, because it switches the computer off when finished!.

The only thing I do extra is, Simple Multiplex the files in Tmpgenc, before burning with Nero.

  8. Colindale...

I get good results with DVDx 2.2 also but i have never used the 'simple multiplex' feature in TMPEGnc... what does it do and how will it improve my VCDs?

DVDx2.2 was all I used before someone advised me HOW to make DVD2SVCD work. Screwed me up every time, went back to DVDx, every convert played in every machine I tried it in.Can't say the same for DVD2SVCD, and it took from 1/3 to 1/2 the time, and would almost exactly fill the number of disks you wanted if you jiggered the bitrate (XVCD), almost meaning that sometimes it would make an extre 10 or 20 meg file that was nothing but credits, so discardable.
I thought the quality was more than adequate, not DVD, but damn good enough.

    jonas more,

?what does it do and how will it improve my VCDs?

I dont make VCD's only SVCD's, I use TMPgnc Simple Multiplex to VBR
my files by 5% so they fit on 90 miute CD's.

I set the CD size to 934 meg in DVDX, run them through the Simple Multiplex
SVCD VBR process to reduce the files to just under 900 meg then burn with
    Nero SVCD.

I adjust the "bitrate" to fill the two CD's depending on the length of the movie

When I first found DVDx I used it all the time. I also tried using other plugin encoders within DVDx (bbmpeg, panasonic, CCE) some worked but some didn't. Can't remember which now but I know I had to use some tricks and settings.

You can also frameserve from DVDx to your favorite encoder like tmpgenc. That way you can rip, resize (resolution) and/or change the framerate in DVDx and still use another encoder that accepts frameserving.

Ripping with smartripper provides more options (chapters etc...) but for simple movie extracts DVDx is very good.

Recently, using DVDx I backed up some of my DVD's as a test using the avi (DIVX 5.05) codec and got pretty good results at 750kbs at full DVD res 720x480 and also 640x480. Movies of just under 2 hours fit on 1 700 mb CD. The picture quality is pretty good with excellent sound. The image clarity dropped off when I tried to go below 700kbs so with divx 5, 2 hours is probably max for a clear picture.

Test vcd's using DVDx resulted in slightly inferior quality to those made with tmpgenc even using the best possible settings but very watchable.
The only reason I moved on is in search of the ultimate solution (real DVD quality on a 80 min cd which will play on a standalone player. (I'm still searching)
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
