A lot of people will probably tell you LPCM, but I prefer AC3, because it doesn't take up as much space as LPCM (leaves more room for video) and it can sound just as good as LPCM.

  3. Cool and thnx for the reply but how would you encode your audio into those formats either LPCM or AC3. Isn't Dolby AC3?? Is there some special software that will do that for you or is that in TMPGEnc or is that when you are converting a file??

Get BeSweet, and BeSweet GUI (find them in the TOOLS section). They will allow you to convert to and from pretty much any common format (MP2/MPA/AC3/WAV). It will also convert to/from MP3 with the TooLame addon to the GUI.

LPCM is similar to CD audio. When you author a DVD, most software it will convert the audio to LPCM. There are some that will accept AC3 or MPEG audio though. Ulead DVD Movie Factory 2 and Ulead DVD Work Shop are two that I know of that will accept AC3. I think that DVDLab will as well, but I've never tried that one.

BeSweet also supports converting to/from basic PCM audio (WAV Audio). So does TMPGenc for that matter.

DJRumpy: TMPGEnc will convert to wav audio? I did not know that. I thought TMPGEnc would only encode audio to MPEG audio - either MPEG 1 layer 1, or MPEG 1 layer 2.
To convert to AC3 I use BeSweet. I use VirDub to convert to LPCM audio. I open my video clip in VirDub, go to the Audio menu, choose Full Processing Mode, then click on Compression, and choose <No Compression (PCM)>, then go to the file menu and choose Save Wav.

Not a bad question Go here: https://www.videohelp.com/tools#codecs and d/l the AC3 codec. Then you can play the AC3 file in MediaPlayer, or any other player you want.

When I play AC3 files I use Windows Media Player, and it tries to tell me that it needs to search for a program that can play it, but I tell it to open it anyway, and then it pulls up a message about that it may not play correctly, but it plays it just fine. Otherwise, do you have a DVD player on your computer? Something like PowerDVD? That will play the AC3 file for you...

The AC3 file can be played in Media Player. You can ignore the codec and error messages. This of course, assumes you have an AC3 codec installed. I prefer to play mine in the DVD player software as well.

TMPGenc will produce AVI, MPEG video (1 & 2), MPEG 1 (layer 1&2) audio, WAV audio, and even sequence files (BMP, JPG, PPM, and TGA..think of it as a slideshow).

The option is on the FILE menu: FILE | OUTPUT TO FILE. The settings are simular to exporting/saving in DVD2AVI.
