Well, thanks for telling us what you don't want (and hey, who would expect people to offer DVD advice from a DVD/VCD site anyway? :P )
But if you want some actual help, how 'bout telling us what you do want, and what you plan to use the computer for? -

What is your budget?
If you are buying components to build one ( it's easy, so do you think you can do it? ) first off, go to Staples and buy a Maxtor 160 gig drive before Saturday, as it is a 1 week sale, for 180, minus a 30 buck instant coupon, minus an 80 buck mail in rebate. 75 bucks out of pocket, after the rebate comes in. You gotta go to Staples to print out the coupon.
Get a decent box, minimum 400 watt Power Supply, an Asus A8NX or something like that motherboard, about 120, most everything on board, 512 megabytes of RAM, a CD burner, a LiteOn 16X DVD-ROM drive to read-rip DVDs, a floppy drive for maybe 10 bucks. Get the most processor you can afford, a couple steps down from cutting edge, meaning not the AMD 3000XP, but maybe the 2600, or, if you prefer Intel, 2.5 or 2.6 gigahertz, rather than the 3.06 gig.
Anyhow, not counting the hard drive, 120 for board, 50 for RAM, 50 for a burner, 40 for the DVD-ROM, 40-50 for the box, 10 for the floppy, 100 or so for the CPU, PLEASE pay the extra 10 or so for a BOXED CPU, it comes with heatsink, which you will have to pa extra for if you buy an OEM CPU out of a tray, and you WILL get 3 years warranty, instead of 15 to 30 days on an OEM. I think the Asus board is all in one, but if not you will have to buy either a video card or an audio card, or both. With the hard drive, you should spend less than 500, and have a kick ass machine. You are on line, so you have an OS. Just install it on the new machine and retire the old one, unless you can't use them both at the same time, and then Microsoft says it is legal, according to their EULA.
Please excuse some of the answers above. Sometimes the boys go a little overboard with their sarcasm.
Don't get offended. Come back often. -
Rvli, you are excused from the following.
Karate, that was kinda a shitty response to what might be called a "cry for help". What the hell you gotta make the guy out to be a, "Doh", dummy for?
He asked a question, and didn't want to go into a DVD burner discussion. Hell, I don't wanna go into a DVD burner discussion. When I buy 1, I will ask questions about them, but for now, I just read the posts that are DVD burner specific.
Shame on you. ( I guess that doesn't mean anything, at your age, but so be it.) -

You want to buy a mchine, do as ducatti suggests. Dell, for one, has as good a support system as anyone. If you want to build one, I don't know how much you know, I DO know you've been watching this site 9 months longer than Karate Media has, so maybe you have picked up some pointers, at least enough to ask what is a good video setup.
The specifications I laid out above are good, but the Mother board is a little on the high side, at least as far as I am concerned. My boards usually run me about 80 dollars. I know there are some snobs who will tell you you have to spend 500 dollars, at least, to get a really, really, good board, but they're full of shit. 1 in 100 would be able to tell you the difference in board A and board B. Buy what you can afford, and I do not know if you can afford super quality or not, and don't give a damn. You get more bullshit from the snobs, tell 'em to stick it where the sun don't shine. -

Get a clue before you start mouthing off to me again. Notice those "smilies"? That's how people communicate humor over the internet. It means, "Don't take what I'm saying so seriously."
Someone comes to a DVD/VCD website and says, to the effect of, simply, "Tell me what kinda computer to buy and don't be telling me no fancy stuff!" That's not real helpful, is it? It's just kind of negative and vague. So, in a humorous, sarcastic manner, I attempt to nudge our poster into giving more information.
As for my post to rvl, well damn man, do I have to string up neon lights and scream, "I'M JUST KIDDING!" Or are the smiley faces enough?
If you actually paid attention to most of my posts, you'd know that I've always tried to be incredibly helpful to all sorts of people.
And how do you know how long I've been watching this site? By my "registered on" date? I'd been coming to this site long before I registered to post on the forum, so please don't be presumptious.
I'm certainly not a snob. I just want cnsane to explain what he's looking for. And when he does, if I can help, I most certainly will. -
Hehehe, smilies
www.micropro.com
This place has motherboard/CPU combos that aren't too bad and they offer good warranties on them. If you're new to assembling a PC I wouldn't trust doing the CPU install myself. Besides, the warranty covers the board and the processors. I made a return on my system board with them and it was very painless. -
Karate,
If that was the context, my apologies.
It "looked" more like a ROTFLMAO comment.
It's a DVD/VCD site but posted in off topic, so a legit remark.
Besides, his previous posts indicate he has been converting for a while, but wants to build/buy a better system, particularly since one post said the file was too large for his drive. -
Well, you've probably seen just as many "need help" posts like this one as I have -- people tend to forget that others can't read their minds, or may have not read their other posts. At least that explains why you were telling him about building his own system.
I'd still like cnsane to embellish a bit on what he needs out of his system here in this thread, if only so future readers of this thread can learn something and follow along from A to B.
Of course, I was able to get my hands on a 10-month-old Alienware for $450 (due to some unfortunate circumstances, sadly), so my opinions may be coming from undeserved lofty heights...
But, seriously, cnsane, if you're still reading, throw a few ideas of what you're looking for in a computer, your price range, etc. Also, how handy are you really? Building your own system is nice, but you don't get a warranty...
Hope to hear more... -
Karate: If I said the name Dave would you know what I mean? Also the word Basement? If not, just ignore.
Dell and Gateway both have some good deals on complete systems, after rebates. ANd I shudder to suggest this but..... Tigerdirect.com, just make sure the description says NEW.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?
