Ok, probably a dumb question...but on media Web sites and such, what does it mean when they say the DVDs come in a "cake box?"

It's also sometimes called a spindle. It's a stack of 50 or 100 pieces in a plastic case with a removable cover.

Yet on the same retail site, you will see some bulk media listed as coming on a spindle and other bulk media coming in a cake box. It's certainly confusing to me!

Dunno for sure but I think the cake box would have a plastic (usually clear) removable cover and the spindle could be just in a shrink wrap roll.

Ok cool. I like all my stuff in cake boxes. Jewel cases are a pain to mess with. I can keep 100 DVDs on my desk no prob on spindle, but 100 jewel cases? Yikes!

You might also try the 96 CD holders available here: http://www.yesbuy.net for $8.50 plus S&H, which I find much more practical, as you have much better access to each disk than a cake box. These are nice, compact, and sturdy, and a great way to make your DVD or CD collection portable. They charge quite a hefty S&H fee, so it's more economical to order 2 or 3 at once.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

A cake box is just that... a cake box. Have you ever gotten a cake fro mthe supermarket? It's a small box that lifts from the top, but one side its attached so the top doesnt come completely off. Like a hinge.

    It is not a spindle.

If you buy a cake box of CD-Rs you will get usually 4 stacks of 50 CDs shrink wrapped, not spindled, and positioned next to each other... This is not a likely storage method. Everytime i have bought "cake box" cd-rs from ebay, thats what i have gotten
