  1. Hi All,

I'm a pretty experienced Mac user, but having just bought a 15" 1Ghz PowerBook, am new to the whole DVD burning scene. I've lurked these awesome forums for a few days & did a lot of searching, downloaded all the software, and decided to have a go.

I ripped my DVD with DVD Backup (Star Wars Ep2 if its of any concern) and stripped the region code & copy protection etc. That went fine.

I then used DVD2One to compress the files (again fine), and then burned the VIDEO_TS folder in Toast. I named the volume exactly the same as the original DVD, and put in an empty AUDIO_TS folder as well.

What came out kinda works, and kinda doesn't - my Pioneer home DVD unit rejects the disc, as does Apple DVD player, however VLC will load the .VOB files & play them perfectly off the disc.

It seems as if I've burned a Data DVD with .VOB files, as opposed to a DVD movie (if there is such a difference - like burning a data CD with 44KHz 16bit AIFF files, as opposed to an audio CD)

One thing I noticed is that the VIDEO_TS folder that DTOX created only has the 5 .VOB files, nothing else.

As it was my first go, I'm not devastated - at least its sort of usable & not a coaster! But I'd love to get it right.

    Any ideas?

  2. Ooops - forgot to mention that Apple DVD player will not recognise the folder (on my HD) when using the "Open VIDEO_TS folder" command.

For a proper DVD video, do there nedd to be more files in the VIDEO_TS folder, or just the 5 .VOB files? (the first 4 are 1GB, the 5th is 251mb)

it could very well be you did burn a data dvd.

Can you do this for me, put the dvd into your mac.
open the disk, so that you see whats inside it.

    tell me whats there.
    Audio_TS??
    Video_TS??

whats in the video_ts folder? Open the video_Ts folder, select all, copy and paste into this reply post. it will put all whats in there in here as text.

2nd. what did you use to burn the dvd?

    Toast??

If so, make sure you go to OTHER and choose DVD!

A proper VIDEO_TS folder will have more than just .vob

typically there are VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP and VTS_01.IFO and VTS_01.BUP (thats why I ask you to paste the contents of your VIDOE_TS folder to this reply)

    i wait for your reply.

  4. Thanks for the quick reply - here are the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder:

    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    VTS_01_5.VOB

There is also an empty AUDIO_TS folder (That I added manually as per your FAQ)

    That's it!

Should DTOX have spat out more files? Is there an option in DTOX that I may not have used?

I did use Toast -> Other -> DVD to burn the disc.

    Cheers

Well......... did you do MOVIE COPY or DISK COPY?!?!?

Ive only done DISK COPY and can tell you you should have WAY more than that!!!!!!!!!!! For gladiator.

I bet you did movie only copy.

  6. I think you're on to it - movie copy sounds familiar!

Thought it was a little strange that there were only 5 files in the VIDEO_TS folder!

I'm not going to re-burn it though, as the movie works on VLC on my PB, which is what I use to watch my movies anyway. Plus the movie isn't that great - not worth spending another $3 on!

Oh well, at least it wasn't a total loss, not bad for a n00b first effort.

Next movie I decide to copy, I'll use Disk Copy and let you know how I go.

    Thanks for the help!

You may want to look around for a post on MOVIE ONLY COPY.

I have not done one personally, but memory serves that you have to do an extra step to get it to be more compatible. Movie only will produce the .vob's only (since those are the video files)

I would suggest testing the burn on a dvd-rw with disk copy, since im not sure that will work. It could be the cause of the problems.

    look into getting toast titanium
    http://www.roxio.com/en/products/toast/index.jhtml

its rather cheap (you can even save 10 dollars by getting it online and downloading a .dmg)

let me know how it works.

  8. redgsr:

Run your movie through DVD2OneX again, and make sure you have plenty of disk space to complete the process.

A complete set of files from a "movie only" copy will also include:

    VIDEO_TS.ifo
    VIDEO_TS.bup
    VTS_01_0.ifo
    VTS_01_0.bup

These are index files that tell the DVD player how to load the files and play them, etc. It's possible that when you ran DVD2OneX the first time, there was not enough free disk space to complete the process; or maybe accidently the "cancel" button got pushed, or something.

If these files never got written, then the problem isn't one about burning disks. Don't burn a disk until you see these files generated, and that you get it to work by opening the VIDEO_TS folder with Apple's DVD Player software.

    Good luck.

  10. Hmmmm......strange.

Just ripped Ocean's Eleven to my HD w/DVD Backup, and used DTOX to compress. I had planned to do this twice - once with the 'Movie Only' option, and once with ' Disc Copy' option.

I did the Movie Only copy (just as in my previous effort w/ Star Wars), as I didn't want the special features, extra soundtracks etc taking up room & therefore compressing the movie further. Thist time it spat out all the .IFO & .BUP files too, and Apple DVD Player likes it! Guess its time to burn!

There is a bit of a hiss in the sound (I only included the 2ch stereo soundtrack) - is this normal? Will it get worse if I include more soundtracks?

  11. SUCCESS!!!!

Burned DVD works perfectly in my Mac & Standalone DVD player. Just the film - no menus etc (how I wanted it)

This is so cool - when I bought my PB about 6 weeks ago I had no idea that all of this was possible, I just wanted the SuperDrive for iDVD as I make a lot of DV movies in iMovie, I had no idea that all this was possible!

<goes off to video store & blank DVD store>

    Thanks again for the help!
