  2. Xvid films can be a problem because they usually have bad frames. I find the best way to deal with them is this:
    1. Inspect the films for bad frames. You can use virtualdub mp3 freeze
for this. If there are bad frames you must delete them using VDub.
This method is not foolproof since I have had bad frames in my film
even though Vdub said there were none. When you delete the bad
frames you will generate a new avi file.
    2. Extract the audio to a wav file. If the original had no bad frames use
that. If it had bad frames then use the new file you generated when
    you deleted them.
    3. Extract the video to a new avi file without an audio. Use the same file
you used to generate the audio.
    4. Load the new video avi file ( the one without the audio) for the
video and the wav file you created as the audio. Now start to play the
film in Vdub. If it is in sync, drag the bar to the middle of the film and
start to play it again. If it is still in sync drag the bar close to the end of
the film. Play it and see if it still stays in sync. If it stays in sync
throughout the film you are good to encode. If it doesn't, chances are
you still have some bad frames and you are going to have to inspect
the film manually to see where they are and delete them.

Let me know if this works for you.
