You'll have to clarify what you mean. Most authoring packages accept AVI files, but they have to be converted to MPEG-2 before burning to disk, since all (video) DVDs use MPEG-2.

I currently use Ulead DVD Workshop, and I used to use Sonic MyDVD. They both accept .avi files. I never used these products, but I'm pretty darned sure that Sonic DVDit and Ulead Movie Factory accept .avi files.

I'm curious to know which ones you've seen that don't accept .avi files.

I've been using DVD Lab and ReelDVD... I don't think either of them will accept avi's, because I don't think that either includes an encoder. They expect the files to be (more or less) compliant before you import them.

I could be wrong, though... that's just one of the things I thought I had to do, have all my files prepped before going to the authoring stage.

Then again, I'd rather do the conversion on my own, where I probably have a bit more control over the settings and output.

Right, if the authoring package does not include an encoder, it will defintely not accept .avi files.

BTW, I agree with you regarding external encoding. I use TMPGEnc for all of my main titles. The only thing I let DVDWS encode is the motion menus/buttons.
