I took my DVD-R backup of North by Northwest around to play at my brother's house a couple of nights ago. Annoyingly, now his ALBA 114 machine will only play the North By Northwest backup disk. It refuses to play any of his original DVDs (and he has lots of them).

Hours of tinkering failed to solve the problem.

Is it possible that my single Ritek 1x DVD-R backup could have srewed up his machine so monumentally?

My backups play fine on my Samsung and Medion standalones.

Has anyone else had this problem, or one like it?

    Cheers

I don't think that backup DVD discs can do that much damage, although whenever I put in a backup disk, my DVD player does take longer to load up the disk compared to an "original". I wouldn't have a 100% definite answer, but I really don't think it can mess it up that bad.

  3. The only possibility I know is that the DVD-R is not burned till the end so that the lead out is missing.

The player could be damaged that way because the laser pickup smashes against the end of its rail inside the drive.

  4. A similar problem happened to my brothers DVD player also an alba.
what had happened is for some reason the region code had changed itself.
The solution was to hack the region by folling the instructions here

this should solve the mysterious alba problem or i'll eat my shoes!!!

It could be leather upper for dinner!

Thanks for the swift reply chaps. I'll let you know if the re-hacking solution works.

I'm sorry to say that the re-hacking didn't solve the problem.
Good job my bro's still got the receipt for his standalone.

How do you like your shoes cooking?

    Thanks again
