Thanks to advice from Metaluna and others, I took my CD burner out last night and put the DVD-ROM (Lite-On LTD-163, I think) in. When ripping one of my DVD's it now takes 5-20 minutes instead of 25-45. Yikes! This drive tops out at 16X as compared to 2X for the Sony burner.

i flashed my 105 with the new firmware and it rips DVD9 in just 9 mins.
