I found a 10PK of Maxell DVD-Rs for $23.99 which is pretty decent for a namebrand DVD-R. Anyone else seen these @Wal-Mart?

  2. Well, that's a little unfair. You can find Maxells even at Meritline for about the same price as that eBayer. You can certainly find online major brands for cheaper than $2.39 per disk.

I think the original poster's point is still pretty valid -- for being able to walk into a nationwide discount department store and find DVD-R media for that price is pretty darn good. It's certainly a far cry from the $3.99 per disk Staples still wants for any of its branded stuff.

Heck, even *seeing* DVDR media at Wally-world is pretty impressive (I know I was pretty impressed the first time I saw it at Target). There was a time less than a year ago I had to drive 40 miles (for me that's an eternity) just to find *one* store that carried DVDR (CompUSA).

There are times it's nice to be able just to run to the store and pick up some media in an emergency (when I don't have even two days to wait for Meritline to deliver). This is good information to know.

It's refreshing to see Wally World not jump so quickly onto the DVD+R bandwagon. Maybe this is one retail chain that has really done their homework (unlike my "former" best place to buy disks locally, BestBuy). Alas though, Sam's Club still only sells DVD+R disks.

I looked at my local WM SuperStore last Saturday, but they didn't have any recordable DVD media on the shelves.

As for that "eBayer", slap on his $10.95 S&H fees, plus the high probability that these are pirate disks, and you soon have no real bargain at all. I'll go with the branded Maxell over the unbranded crap anyday.

  4. What do you mean by " pirate discs" slk001?

If they are labled as maxwell then aren't they just that? or do people mis-label cheap media and sell it as name brand?

    just curious

    Hello

I was buying 2x Maxell DVD-R discs at BEST BUY. They came in a package of 10 in standard size (not slim) CD jewel cases. The box was ORANGE color. The price was about $35.00 for the 10 pack but just recently it went down to $25.00 but they are almost always out-of-stock so I've been using the Fuji 10 pack they have at BEST BUY. Same deal, it is a 2x DVD-R 10 pack in standard size CD jewel cases. The Fuji brand was also $35.00 but now like the Maxell discs it is only $25.00

They seem to have the Fuji discs in stock more than the Maxell discs. Maybe becuase the Fuji discs don't mention (that I can see) on the package that they are 2x but they burn that way (without me having to do any trickery) on my friend's SONY VAIO computer which has a Pioneer A04/104 DVD-R burnder.

So far the quality of both brands seem to be A-OK and we have tested them in several brands of DVD players including Panasonic, Pioneer, Sumsang and a Cyberhome (the infamous CH-DVD 500).

I don't mind paying that price for grade A brand name 2x DVD-R media.

Our Wal-Mart doesn't carry DVD-R disks. Or Any DVD media for that matter, but they carry the drives.

There is a manufacturer "out there" (probably on mainland China) who is making UNBRANDED DVD-R blanks in bulk. Since they are making just "crap", they need to pose as a high-quality vendor (in the VENDOR IDENTIFIER section of the PRE-RECORDED DISK INFORMATION area of the BURST CUTTING AREA). Their first victim of this identity theft (that I'm aware of, anyway) was TDK. These sold on eBay in 100 pk unbranded spindles (which TDK says that they do NOT sell), and were generally pure garbage (just read the customer feedback).

I presently have a spindle of 25 from a supposedly reputable dealer that I am trying to return (they still haven't replied to my emails requesting an RMA after 5 days). My "fakes" list themselves as "TDK G02" disks in almost the exact same way that my branded TDK disk do. But even a cursory visual examination of these disks would reveal that they are NOT TDKs.

I have also heard that RITEK and MAXELL disks have suffered the same identity theft, but I don't have the "in-hand" proof that I do with the TDKs.

The disks refered to on eBay appear to be unbranded, just like the TDKs. I notice a bad disk almost immediately, because I routinely burn over 4,675,000,000 bytes on a disk (my maximum burn so far has been about 4,703,000,000 bytes).

just called my walmart, they said they dont carry dvd-r's Oh well.

However, I find that if you go to www.dealmac.com, click on storate in the lower left corner (scroll down a bit) you will almost always find a good deal for dvd-r's

i just got 25 of the 2x Maxell's for $33 from supermediastore.com using the code provided on the dealmac page. Its expired now however, but there are always deals floating around

I also ordered a big order of the 2x Maxells from Meritline, I've had mixed reports on them but they claimed they will replace them with a like value in Riteks if they sucks. I'll let everyone know how they work out... should be here within a week.

  10. Just as an interesting note, I usually surf around to see if any companys have specials on dvd-r and when I hit Supermedia store, I noticed something strange. They used to market those "generic" unbranded maxells at the same time that meritline and cdrdvdrmedia started. Now supermedia doens't have them anymore. I did notice that their "New True 2x Media" it uses the same description and the same picture as those unbranded maxells they were marketing before. Strange.

Yeah, I know someone could probably find a better deal somewhere else (even more so if it's generic DVD-Rs), but it was pretty cool to just see Wal-Mart carry them. I saw the same ones in Circuit City for $34.99!!! I went to one of my other Wal-Marts (I am surrounded by about 10 to 12 Wal-Marts ) and they had Maxell DVD-Rs as well. I went to Target and saw the best deal I have ever seen on TDKs.... $44.96 for a 20 Pack. They also got these new cool looking TDK DVD-Rs that came in Amray-like cases. I guess I won't need to go to Best Buy to get a good deal on namebrands anymore unless of course they bring on another decent special with rebate/s.

LanEvo7: When I purchased those Maxells at Meritline I did a little reasearch on their forum over there, it seems that the brand they sell on their own at Meritline 2x switches around to whatever 2x rated disk they are happy with that is cheapest. So its very possible they decide to sell the 2x Maxells under their own name for now.

Like I said, they have not updated my order status but I'm hoping to have them in by Monday or Tuesday, I'll let everyone know when I get a chance to test them. So far the responses I've seen have been mixed, but there are always some people who complain no matter how good a product is, so I figure I'd try for myself.[/b]
