  1. Most of the avi's i download from the net are around 700-750 mb. When I try to put them on a dvd it always says they are at least 5 gigs. What is the problem?

Mydvd will convert the 700 mb avi to dvd mpg format with pcm audio. PCM audio is very big so you can't fit much on a dvd then. So try another authoring/converting tool where you can use ac3 or mpeg audio like moviefactory.

  5. Is there any way I can leave the avi format and just convert the audio to ac3?

Also, what authoring software do u prefer, and is there any that can burn avi's to disc?

You can burn avis to a dvdr but they wont work on most standalone dvd players. If you want it to work on most dvd players you must make dvd-video(mpeg video and pcm/ac3/dts/mpeg audio).

Try neodvd or moviefactory, you just have to drag the avi and it will convert. Remember to lower the video quality settings if it doesn't fit.

  7. What do u mean my drag? Every time I try to add the avi it says file form mismatch. Also, i converted the avi to mpeg, and it says the file is not a compliant mpeg.

You've met the aggrevation from people using different codec on the 'net ........

You'll find that those .avi movies are encoded using DivX probably, and most author software just can't handle converting them, before burning onto a DVD

So, have a look at the guides on here, and you'll see what fun there is to be had from re-encoding it to a format that you're author software can handle

The guides really are worth looking at, they offer plenty of help and advice, and explain very clearly exactly what to do, and why certain things refuse to work as simply as you think, especially if you want to burn a DVD to play on a home DVD player as opposed to your computers DVD player

Most people seem to prefer TMPGenc as its virtually free, but give CCE a try for enconding
