  1. I'm trying to use premiere to make a slideshow on DVD for viewing on my 16:9 widescreen. What size do I need to crop the digital images to perfectly fill the screen without distortion? I cropped to 720x480, but that doesnt seem to look correct. Is that the correct size to crop (actually, I'm cropping at a larger ration of 720x480 to keep resolution)?

Cut the picture in 853x480 (or higher resolution but keep the 16:9 aspect = height/width = 1.7777777) and then resize to 720x480 and use it as the slideshow image. Then when you play it in 16:9 mode it will be stretched so it will look okey. You may want too add some black borders also(around 5%) because of the tv overscan.

  3. Thanks for the tip. After messing around with it I also found another way (I tested it with a 4 clip slideshow on my dvd player). I used photoshop's aspect mask, which I set for 16:9. It cropped them exactly as needed. In Premiere I just made sure that the 'keep aspect ratio' was not checked. It looked stretched in premiere, but when played back it worked like a champ.
