Hi
I am trying to backup Band a Parte.
I have in the past succesfuly ripped a DVD to my harddrive and then burnt it.
This disk will not get past 3%, I have always used DVD Decrypter before which worked fine.
As it did not work I have also tried CladDVD and SmartRipper, neither can get more than 2-3%
I have windows XP, and a 105, i have the original 1.30 firmware, that came with the machine.
Are there some films that just cant be ripped to the harddrive ?

Hi,
for example "The Bourne Identity".
You can't even copy it to HD, because it has been copyprotected by Mindvision (dunno if it's right spelled) -
The only movies I have'nt been able to rip have been damaged or faulty. Try playing the dvd to check that it plays well without clitches past that 2-3% mark. I had a copy of Mulan that would not rip past the 7min mark, it would play ok until 7mins then momentarily freeze then continue playing, no damage to the disc, it was pristine. I ended up capturing it
Movie only DVD9 to DVDR guide.

as for only getting to 2%, have you tried playing in a standalone player to see if there is a really big error/scratch on the disc, funny how it gets to the same place and stops in every ripper -
The only DVD's I ahven't been able to rip were physically damaged. I have seen a disk that looked pristine, but was a damaged pressing. A standalone player will skip over it, but an encoder will crash.

I have just watched the first 11 mins, and could not detect any probs on my stand alone. The film is only 90mins, so I have watched about 10%.
The disk itself looks practically perfect, apart from some tiny marks, but you get that on any DVD.
I will try to extract a few more times.

You should also consider that any ripper does not always rip the movie part of the disc first. It may well be getting stuck on one of the 'extras' or one of the menus. Just because the movie plays correctly does not mean there is not a damaged area elsewhere on the disc.

Here is what I have done when I have had problems ripping (and I have backed up Bourne Identity with no problems).
1. Open up the DVD with a software DVD player (like PowerDVD)
2. Play the movie, watching just a second or two of each chapter, skipping through to each chapter until the last one
3. Go back to the main menu of the DVD, but leave open
4. Open SmartRipper and select "Files"
5. Select "All"
6. Start Ripping
I have seen the ripping process get stuck trying to find an encryption ID. It sort of goes into a loop. If you do the above procedure, the encryption IDs will be "visible" because the disk has been played at each chapte point, therefore each VOB ID is found.
Give it a shot. -
There is no way to make a DVD unrippable. If there was Then there would be no way for standalone players to play it.

Thx for all your inputs,
after tesing the dvd on my standalone player, and giving it a good clean, it ripped first time using smart riper.
I think this may be simialr to what ptmurphy suggested.
Anyway thx guys

OK, i'll try
I just borrowed this movie from a library and just tried to rip it.
but after all, when I saw this motion picture i decided to buy it...
this will not make as much trouble as I had with the copy i borrowd.
but I thank you all with your help and i'm still at the oppinion:
if you see a movie you like... buy it and don't rip it...
