Heard on the radio that some states were going to court today to "stop the distribution of DVD copying software." Anybody else heard anything?

doesn't matter - under the DMCA, SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter and any other CSS "circumvention device" is already illegal.
it'll be a good trick to stop the distribution, too...

there was a court about the css decrypter and they won
Those software ARE legal since they are not only for pirating, they are also usefull to make backup of your own DVD and they can't call this illegal since it's your own DVD.
every month, we see a news like that, but no court yet have won against those software (beside Napster) -
vric you might want to read up on your DMCA. I think you'll find it quite shocking.

If the music industry can't stop Kazaa from sharing songs, and Hollywood can't shut down Edonkey.. how exactly are they going to stop people from getting smartripper?

They may not be able to stop all of it, but they can certainly make life more difficult for all of us. They can shut down web sites that have the downloads and links avalible. Little by little, they are winning.

The court case refered to is movie studios versus 321 studios checkout 321 website for details .... the movie studios are claiming 321 studios dvdxcopy software is illegal the case started today (may 16 2003)

They can't close sites in countries that don't cooperate but they can make you a criminal if you happen to live in a country where the product is banned and if you use it in that country. Even if the url is located in a country where the software is perfectly legal (you might not even get a warning in that case at the discretion of the site) you would still be breaking the law of your country if you download it (even unknowingly). Although individuals in such a situation might justify it to themselves and ignore the law, the studios win by making the ordinary citizen a criminal for simply backing up something that they own. It doesn't matter if they prosecute any private individuals or not, morally, ethically and legally you have become a criminal.
Funny that with all this, studios are grossing more per movie than ever before (OK they charge more) but DVD sales are also up by leaps and bounds. Digital TV is competing with DVD sales too since movies are often released for broadcast shortly after the release of the DVD.
If the studios weren't so greedy they would hold off broadcast release a little longer and that would probably increase DVD sales but of course TV broadcasters would probably pay them less if the movie was older.
Disney Studios must be laughing all the way to the bank, all their old vhs releases (which we bought and own) are being re-released on DVD and then put in this so called vault for 10 years. So guess what? My wife has to buy multiple DVD copies of each movie so the grandchildren don't do without and of course we need a copy too.
Please!!!!!!!!!! That's thousands of $$$ in the last few years from one home including movie attendance and digital cable expenses from which their distribution arm directly benefits financially.
Let me at them!!!!!
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
Seems to me there are way too many software backup titles out there and to even try to stop them is futile at best.
Also I really don't understand what the movie people are afraid of in the first place. Are they worried little johnny is going to copy their DVD titles on mommy's Packard Bell and sell them to his friends for a dollar each. Not likely and besides I have seen new DVD's selling in the bargain bin for as low as $4.99. -
