  1. When i try to encode a vob file with ffmpegx with the mencoder settings with an embedded subtitle i get this warning in the terminal:

New_Face failed. Maybe the font path is wrong. 2mb A-V:0.000 [0:0]
Please supply the text font file (~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf).
    subtitle font: load_sub_face failed.

The movie encodes normaly to a xvid.avi, with the exception of the subtitles. Is something wrong with the .vob or do i need another subtitles iso package? If so, where can i find those packages?

The quality of the coded movie is amazing, nothing wrong with that part of the conversion.
Other movies with dutch subtitles encoded well.

  2. You should specify the subtitle number (if 0SEx said you were ripping title 5, set subtitle number to 4).

  3. I ripped the movie with osex, there was only one subtitle to choose, dutch subtitle, number 1. In ffmpegx i already specified number 0 in the subtitle box. The problem is for this movie only, open shiiva crashes on this movie/subtitle too.
Most of the other movies i encoded with dutch subtitles burned right away. It's only a problem with this particular movie. The subtitles of this movie plays good with the dvd-player (stand alone and macdvd). Maybe i just have to wait for a new ffmpegx/mencoder/mplayer combo to succeed with this particular one. Or maybe it's an osex fault.

    Thanks for your reply.

  4. Try to extract subtitles as a VobSub file with the ffmpegX "Extract" tool, then use "View" to playback the movie and add the subtitles at playback time (load the .avi in the Video.. field and the .idx in the Audio.. field). Any luck?

  5. With your mentioned settings, the movie plays with audio, but no subtitles. The extracted vitaklein.avi.sub file size is 0 kb.
When i open the file vitaklein.avi.idx in texteditor, this is the output:

    # VobSub index file, v7 (do not modify this line!)
    #
    # Generated by MPlayer dev-CVS-030501-11:28-3.1
    # See <URL:http://www.mplayerhq.hu/> for more information about MPlayer
    # See <URL:http://vobsub.edensrising.com/> for more information about Vobsub
    #
    size: 720x576

    # Language index in use
    langidx: 0

    id: xx, index: 0

I don't know the syntax of an .idx file, but i think the subtitle is missing in this file. Again, i don't know the syntaxis, forgive me if i 'm wrong.
When i convert the movie WITHOUT the subtitles to a xvid.avi, the same terminal warning as in the start of this thread appears. Maybe there's something wrong with my mplayer binary?

Yes, the subtitle is missing. Make sure you picked the right title number when extracting to a file.

    Download the stablebinaries here
    Sorry for my english.

  8. Thanks for your help so far. I installed the stable binaries and made sure i made the right subtitle choices(sub minus 1, the default 0 in ffmpegx, there is one sub in the rip, sub 1). The terminal gives the usual text AND the above mentioned warning. I tried another movie with dutch subs, it succeeded right away(again, subtitle minus 1 in ffmpegx). Direct ripping from the dvd gave the same results, so it probably is not an osex thing.

Mpeg2decx and Openshiiva also can't get this particular subtitles right.

When i play the dvd in the macdvd player the subtitles look slighly different compared to other movies. I cannot exactly say what the differences are, they look a little bit uglier. The dvd has got no scratches.

On an online sub-database i found the right .srt subfile but i can't get it in the (xvid mencoder) movie to. This is an (s)vcd option only, i guess.

Being an (newbie)compression die-hard, i only watch compressed movies, and this "la vita e bella" movie is something i really want to see
( call me stupid, i bought the movie and didn't watcht it!).

Yes, as it doesn't make much sense to burn the subtitles in the xvid file, as you can just add them at playback time with MPlayer OSX.

  10. On my clamshell ibook 466 ,unfortunately, it's impossible to watch movies with .sub files with mplayer. And my g4/g5 piggybank is a bit empty .
Maybe i have to wait for a cash-cow to graze on my greenscreen.
Thank you for providing the mac community with your "swiss video knife". My next project is converting right now...... Sub's embedded!
