Hot Weather Leads Some Workers to Strip

BERLIN (Reuters) - A heat wave that has sent temperatures to record highs has prompted some Germans to strip off their clothes in the workplace, Bild newspaper reported on Thursday.

"My boss doesn't mind this at all," Bild quoted Kirsten Sauer in an article next to a picture of the bare-breasted 23-year old saleswoman cooling off in front of a fan in the Berlin clothing store where she works.

"He said it was even cool and trendy."

Temperatures in Berlin hit 34 degrees on Wednesday -- the hottest August 15 in Germany's capital since 1891.

"No one can see me up here," Rainer Papin, 44, told the newspaper, which published a photo of the construction worker at work on a Berlin rooftop wearing just a hard hat, protective gloves and shorts.

Germans have a special fondness for nude bathing, and lie by the thousands during heat waves on the Baltic sea beaches and lake shores. Some big city parks, such as the Tiergarten in Berlin and Munich's English Garden, are often filled with nudists in the hot summer weather.
