    Is it possible to convert an mpeg1 or mpeg2 format movie into an AVI format, and if so what software would you recommed?

    I would recommend you get a copy of VirtualDub-Meg2 (in the tools section on the left). It reads both MPEG1 & MPEG2 and converts to any AVI format that your system supports and provides a good selection of filters.
