making custom dvd inserts

i am looking for a good program for making some custom dvd inserts, something that lets you import pics and edit plus able to edit the spine aswell.

Photoshop is great but if you want something fast and easy try Mediaface4 by neato.It will do everything you want and more. Just ignore the wizard and go straight to the reugalr program. They also make some photomatte inserts that work great with their program.

Nothing hard about Photoshop.

1. Measure your case. They are about 10 inches by 7 inches or so.

2. Open PS. File->New file. Input size (~10x7 or whatever you got) and resolution of 300 dpi. It makes your cover file to work in.

3. Have at it. Import images and cut/paste ito cover. Use fonts. Use paintbrushes. Use filters.

Easy. Again, nothing hard about Photoshop. This is a simple operation, not anything like photography restoration, color matching, or professional print needs.

FYI: Using templates is bad. No two case brands are the same size.

my pick go to Paint Shop Pro by Jasc Software.. really great software under 100$ I use both (PSP and Photoshop) for Web designing. but the new PSP8 is really great and may send Photoshop to second

Paintshop is a cheap alternative too. Photoshop Elements and Photoshop LE are pretty cheap, in the $50 range last I saw in a sale some time back.

Pushing PS to 2nd? Well, we'll see. But I doubt it. But I know PSP is decent, so a good suggestion for sure.

the new PSP8 is incredible... I'm a web designer so I use both (since I have a formation on Photoshop)

I used PSP7 since it's faster and more easy frendly, so for some easy stuff i was working with it.. but the new PSP8 made exactly what Photoshop make, so now I don't really use Photoshop anymore..

Sure Photoshop element and LE are cheap, but lot of option aren't there and for just a bit more money, you can get the full version with full option PSP7 or 8

But for making cover, PSP7 would be great and can be found at about 39$ now since PSP8 is out

2. If you have Nero, the you also have access to the Nero Cover Designer. I use that all the time and it is simple and easy. Good for developing a quick insert. it also has templates for CD labels and card inserts for inside the box.

I tried neato (fellowes.com) 4.x and it's pretty easy - but the dvd template is a little too narrow for a standard case - the front cover (based on the pre-defined spine) is about a 1/4" too narrow...anyone see this / figure it out?

A single DVD case cover is 27.3 cm X 18.3 cm with a 1.4 cm x 18.3 cm spine, the front and back sizes are 12.95 cm X 18.3 cm. these basic sizes apply to most cases (Amaray, Alpha, AOL, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, etc) except for the "Warner Brothers" paperback case.
