in the near future and am a bit confused about the best
    media eg: rom,ram,+,-,
in a nut shell wich is best.

and what is the verdict on dvd x copy i
don`t see much about it on this site but from
what i read at it`s home page it sounds OK

  2. As far as your burner goes, you definately want either +R or -R because they are the ones that will play on standalone DVD players. There's a huge arguement over which is better, and which is more compatable. Just check the DVD player compatabilities here on the website to see that your standalone DVD player will play it. DVD-R media is cheaper, atleast here in the US. Abroad I think that it's pretty comparable in most places, so just find a reliable burner. You can get some that burn both + and -, but they tend to be much more expensive than those that burn just one format.

As far as DVD X Copy is concerned. Don't waste your money on it. You don't really need to buy any software now to backup DVD's. If you want to split DVD-9's onto two disks you can use IfoEdit (free). If you want to compress a movie to fit it onto one DVD-R, use DVDShrink, also free. And to burn, if your burner doesn't come with a burning program, you can use imgtools and DVDDecrypter to burn disks, both free. DVD X Copy is a ripoff. It's absurd that they charge $100 when you can find other programs that will do the exact same thing for free.

  3. Thanks Aaron
for your lengthy reply I take it all onboard

Just one thing I guess you must have used the program dvdxcopy
i realise it is not free but did you find that it works OK.
I will read up more on the shrink program and other sofware
at this site, its still early days for me yet

    Thanks again...

  4. Basically all DVDxCOPY does is split the film over two discs keeping the original quilaity . But it can be done for free with IFOedit.

Most people now are more interested into fitting the re DVD on 1 disc not two so they use programs like DVD2One, DVD95copy or the free DVDshrink.

There are two types of disc out there DVD-R (the official format) and DVD+R they are both pretty compatbile with standalone players but not with each other. There are DVD writers that support both formats. Personally Im firmly in the DVD-R camp..I have a Panasonic DVD recorder that supports DVD-R and DVD-Ram and i had a Pioneer DVD writer that supported it too..but i just bought a Panasonic DVD writer that writes to DVD-R,CD-R and also DVD-Ram which is kinda usefull coz the panny dvd recorder can play em but no other dvd players will.
