I suggest reading some of the guides on this site that tell you step for step how to make backup copies of your DVDs...
    Use what works for you...

Hi- Start under the "How To" section with the newbie "All In One"guides (under "articles"). Once you have a basic understanding, you can find the appropriate method for the type of DVD creation you plan to do!!

  5. 1) Store bought DVDs are either one layer or two layer. It has to do with how long they are. In either case they are also encrypted to prevent copying. If you own the DVD and want to make a backup copy it is generally considered ok to copy the DVD. You must use a program like Smartripper (free) to rip the files and put them on your hard drive.

If the DVD is two layer then the resulting files on your computer will be too big to burn to a disk (Home made DVDs are only one layer). I recommend you buy the program DVD2ONE. It will take the files that Smartripper gave you and compress them and put them on a DVD. For single layer DVDs you can just copy the ripped files to a DVD using whatever burning software came with your DVD writer.

    2) Files downloaded from the computer can be in a variety of formats. Get the free program G-Spot to find out about the file then download the proper codecs or ask specific questions when you know what you are dealing with.

This stuff is not as simple as we would all like. You will benefit greatly by reading the How To's

It all depends on which kind of drive you have. Do you have a DVD-R drive or a DVD+R drive? Once you figure out which format of disc you need, you just need to choose a brand. Most brands are compatible with a majority of "home" DVD players, but I have heard that some of the cheaper media tend to have compatibility issues with some players (meaning the cheaper discs may be less likely to play correctly in your DVD player). I have read that Maxell and Fuji are excellent discs (I use Maxell's and have never had any complications), but it also has a lot to do with everything from the software you use, to the brand and age of your player at home. Also, while you are figuring out all the different methods, it's nice to have a few re-writable DVD's. This way you can experiment without permenantly ruining DVD's. Good luck!!!

By the way, can anyone tell me how "ganJa" was able to put a picture under his name? I thought you had to post twenty times a day to earn the right to put a picture under your "member status". Not that I'm upset or anything

BTW, you guys are being much nicer than I was planning on being to mr. (or mrs) ganja -- did his drive "fall off a truck" or did he trade his bong for a used one? RTFM! (I'm getting pissier every day!)

    I agree with Karate Media...

Nobody spoon-fed me how to make backup copies of DVDs. I had to read the how to's, which are very good and pretty easy to follow...

Click on the Guides and read the ones about backing up DVD to DVDr, then try it. If this fails, then post a question...
    Use what works for you...

  10. Hell, I don't even mind the occasional "How do I do this?" b/c with a few execptions (like DVDShrink), it's not always so straightforward.

BUT (in the words of Timmy) COME ON!

"Are dvd+r's the correct discs to copy dvds exactly"?!!!!

That's on par w/ "where's the 'any' key?"

You must be high or stupid. Wonder which one.

And that's coming from who is hi..... er, happy to admit that he still has lots to learn!

  12. Well, I'm probably a little thicker than you guys thus I've asked a lot of questions that some one else thought was dumb. If someone asks something that I can help with I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Well, I have to admit I was feeling fiesty last night, and was crankier than usual...still, let's look at the facts:

    Someone named

    *1) Ganja

    said that s/he had

*2) downloaded movies (warez, I assume)

that s/he wanted to burn, and didn't even know

    *3) if their burner took +R or -R discs;

also, when two members suggested that Ganja read the numerous, helpful How-To guides (which are a fairly easy entree into DVD burning), s/he reponded with

*4)"thx for your help but i need the quik basics on copying dvds"

In other words: Can someone please write me a Cliffs Notes of the How-To guides b/c I'm don't want to read them for myself.

    Now that's a bad recipe!

Understandably, there may be a language barrier -- perhaps when Ganja says "i need to know if dvd+r are the correct discs to copy dvds exactly," s/he doesn't really mean "is my burner +R or -R?" but simply "Dear helpful sirs and madams, I acquired a Sony DRU 500AX dual format burner a mere fortnight ago and it seems impossible for me to create a working DVD. Can anyone recommend a format or brand which they prefer over all others? Sincerely, the honorable Ganja."

But you are right, presto, and I typically try to be helpful to everyone, because the devil knows that I still have loads to learn, too!

I'm with you on this one man, it's one thing to ask a novice question, it's another matter to follow it up with a stupid one.
