  1. My friends and I have a huge pile of video tapes from past summers that we ( I ) would like to capture, edit, and put onto discs. I will be upgrading my PC this summer and I will need to pick up some sort of capturing hardware. I have a $100 budget. I am thinking PCI solution would be the best bet for me, seeing how cheap most cards are. fyi here is my setup-

    XP1700+
    WD800JB
    8500 64mb
    512mb pc2100

I like my processor speed, encodes fast enough for me. Im pretty sure that my 80gb WD can keep up with the video capturing. my question is--

is a PCI card the solution to my budget, and what should I get? I already purchased software (legally too!) so no need to worry about that. I am considering a Hauppauge WinTV-GO (WinTV190) PCI TV Tuner Card, but I would like to hear some of your opinions first.

btw- my vcr only has RCA/Coax connections, and NO s-video.

    any recommendations?

I assume with 300 plus posts you have trawled through "Capture cards" on left. I use the Aver EZDVD capture card with the drivers that come with it and iuVCR program ( shareware) which is the only one I found I could use with no sync problems (SB16 sound card). I have captured off vhs tapes to max frame size in both win98 and 2000 and shall be trying on xp soon. I use Huffuv compression (or Picvideo if I have limited hard drive space). I have had no problems with copy protection. Aver is cheap and availeable in uk.

  4. I have read the specifications for the hauppauge wintv-go card on hauppauge's homepage and this would be a perfect buy for your budget.

  6. Take a look at the Hauppauge PVR-250 PCI card. With rebate, I paid only $100. for mine, and it does great hardware encoding of both video and audio.
