While the guide is a good one, the biggest problem I have is that it doesn't contain any recommendation of editing (probably due to the fact that you are capturing/encoding real-time).
What you end up with then (if it's acceptable), is any commercials you'd otherwise want to edit out.
Old VHS -> DVD
What I do:
Capture in Scenalyzer Live!, giving me a raw DV Type-2 AVI w/ audio @ 48 kHz PCM WAV. My capture device is a Canopus ADVC-100 connected to a OHCI compliant PCI card (Via 1394 chipset).
Edit: Doesn't matter what you use, I've used VirtualDub, Magix Video DeLuxe 2.0, Premiere, Vegas Video 4... all a matter of personal preference and what interface you like....
which leaves you with an avi that now has commercials cut and any other edits that you have performed.
Encode: You can do one of two things from this point, you can begin your encoding with TMPGenc (I only do video as elemental stream, will explain audio in a second), OR you can apply some filtering (if its a bad source, ex. old tape, etc etc) by frameserving to TMPGEnc (I use avisynth, but VDub is also capable of frameserving, as well as a few others.) Audio, is 48kHz @ 224k ac3 format (DVD compliant) encoding using AC3Machine and BeSweet.exe.
Author: My current favorite is DVDLab. Of course still in the beta-test stage BUT it works for what I am doing. For authoring (once again like editing) it comes to personal choice.
Burning: Nero or Record Now.... I've recently had my first run in with a Nero burning issue on a set-top player... on that note read the forums... it's been documented of DVD issues with Nero..
It's a constant learning experience! I never found an all in one guide for getting VHS to DVD format. What I ended up doing is piecing together any guide that looked like it might pertain to something I needed....
A learning curve....but one worth it if you are aiming for good quality capture from analog source... -
