I have a few .avi files that i have gotten that use the Intel Indio codec for video, and i know that this codec is rather dated but its the only format i have found these files in.
I have tried VLC, Mplayer and Quicktime and NONE want to play the video track. Any suggestions?
Am I missing something here?

Try it in OS 9
I have had that problem before, but you will have to search for the indio codec.

Actually, no it doesnt. I even checked the 10.2 install CDs i ***BOUGHT***.
Even if it were possible under OS 9, the thread title is OS X
Any other suggestions? -
@qshartle. Newer version don't come with OS 9.
I remember that codec....quicktime always played it under OS 9, and even exported it if I remember correctly. Strange it wouldn't work under OS X. Have you searched versiontracker.com for a player? -
everything on versiontracker is of no help...
Its strange how neither VLC, Mplayer, or Quicktime will read them... the audio comes through just fine, but no video. Perhaps i should take this up with the VLC team and see where that gets me.
Even if there was an ultra-buggy open source decoder i would be okay with that.
But there is no way I am going to infect my Mac with an install of OS 9 just to play Indio video files... that is just plain silly.

Nor would I ever tell you to install a whole OS just to watch a video file. It just seems very odd that Quicktime no longer supports it.

The company who developed the Indeo Codec (found their website once). Does not have any source on how the codec works, holds all rights to it, and specifically mentions that there is not going to be an OS X version. FFMPEG does not support it, and x86 binaries are used for mplayer (so again it doesn't work/same for VLC). So unless an open source project wants to reverse engineer, or transfer the codec to OS X, there is absolutely no way to play them.
Apple has no control over it
