I haven't done a huge amount of capturing (yet!), but I am really happy with the Aver EZ DVDmaker so far.

Decent quality capture, easy to use, compatible with a variety of different capture software, and if you act fast you can get it from CompUSA for $50 - $40 in rebates = $10.

  4. I have had good luck with a very inexpensive card. I purchase an I/O Magic PCVR card for $24.99 ($4.99 after rebate) from CompUSA. It is a private labeled Pinnacle card with the S-Video and Composite disabled leaving only the cable RF port. It seems to work very well. The only real problem I have at this point is audio/video synch problems which have nothing to do with capture card.

  5. You can get WinTV card for $20 from CompUSA after rebate. I have thought of
Averdvd card. For Averdvd card, if you want to capture TV program, you have
to feed TV signal to the card from outside. For WinTV card, it has a TV tuner
inside. So I bought a WinTV card.

BTW, the WinTV card I got has a new Fusion chip inside. The enclosed driver
can capture 640x480. But the patch driver for BT8x8 does not work for the card.
So I can not capture 720x480. Since I am making SVCD, 640x480 is good enough
    for me.

With a BT 8X8 card such as the avermedia, the right drivers (btwincap), the right codecs installed and a fast enough cpu and disk drive you can capture to mpeg 1,2 or 4, dv.avi (including canopus codec), MJPEG or huffyuv or uncompresssed. You'll have to track down exactly the software that will work with your setup but it gives you the most flexibility.

  7. Go for Canopus ADVC 50

It is about half the price of the ADVC 100.

It dont have analog output ;(

I have tried many of the 848 or whatever they call them...

Not much sucsess. Work for a while, but not strong.

So verry sensitive cards. Just a few changes to your system and it is fucked up.

But they are the cheapest you will get i think...

If you only need to capture DV then there are alot of cheap good dv cards.

BTW, you have to have a 1394 card to use the ADVC 50 / 100.

    Hope this helps.

    Buzz -

I would, but you'd hate it - so far I've only transferred some rare movies that I have on VHS, and the quality isn't there to begin with... I'm just trying to keep it from getting worse.

If you can wait a few days, I'll post something from a nice source

as far as the chipset, I'm 90% sure that the Aver card is a 8x8 chip... problem is, I'd have to turn my box upside down to check, so you have to wait until I find my dental mirror...
